Residential and Local Sources of Air Pollution

چکیده

Since the early 1970s, environmental agencies have focussed most of their attention on large point sources and transport sources of air pollutants. The myriad of small sources scattered throughout suburban Australia, such as people’s heating appliances, lawnmowers and suburban restaurants, have received little attention. Perhaps this is simply because they are so dispersed or they may have been considered negligible, harder to deal with for technical reasons, or harder to deal with for political reasons. The analysis in this report demonstrates that these sources are not negligible, in fact some, such as woodheaters, are significant contributors to decreased air quality. The report discusses the nature and costs of technical options for reducing emissions from these suburban sources, as well as reductions through changes in user behaviour. Examples of existing controls range from stringent approaches such as banning backyard burning in some locations, through to modest requests for users of woodheaters to try to burn their heaters with less smoke. In many cases, controlling these small sources will be a very cost effective means of reducing total inputs of key air pollutants.

Comparison of Land-Use Regression Modeling with Dispersion and Chemistry Transport Modeling to Assign Air Pollution Concentrations within the Ruhr Area

Two commonly used models to assess air pollution concentration for investigating health effects of air pollution in epidemiological studies are Land Use Regression (LUR) models and Dispersion and Chemistry Transport Models (DCTM). Both modeling approaches have been applied in the Ruhr area, Germany, a location where multiple cohort studies are being conducted. Application of these different mod...

Application of AERMOD to local scale diffusion and dispersion modeling of air pollutants from cement factory stacks (Case study: Abyek Cement Factory)

Today, the cement industry is one of the major air polluting industries in the world. Hence, in this study, owing to the importance and role of contaminants from the plant, an appraisal of the emission contributions in addition to other factors have been discussed. There are several reasons behind the importance of modeling air pollutants. First, the assessment of standards for air pollution, a...

A Preliminary Assessment of Dispersion Level of SO2 in Fars Industrial Region, South of Iran, by GIS

The city of Zarghan is located 25 km northeast of Shiraz, southern Iran. Zarghan is affected by numerous pollution sources such as oil refinery, an industrial park, and Shiraz-Tehran highway. The numerous contaminating sources around Zarghan can cause serious local air pollution. Sulfur dioxide gas is an important index of air pollution in cities. Therefore, in order to control and manage Zargh...
