Ambivalent about Ambivalence: A Re-examination of Heteroskedastic Probit Models

چکیده

While the derivation and estimation of heterogeneous probit models appears straightforward, the properties of such models are not well understood. It is assumed that the properties of these models are identical to those of discrete choice models, but this may not be true. While these models are formally identified, we argue that they suffer from fragile identification. We first look for evidence of fragile identification using a series of Monte Carlo experiments. We then reanalyze data on abortion attitudes and use profile likelihood plots and a convergence analysis to look for signs of fragile identification. We find strong evidence that heteroskedastic probit models tend to be tenuously identified.

Contextual Sources of Ambivalence

When will people become ambivalent about politics? One possibility is that the roots of ambivalence lie within the individual, with differences in political knowledge and attitude strength predicting whether a person internalizes the conflicts of politics. Alternately, attitudinal ambivalence could result from structural differences in the way political choices are presented in the wider politi...

Difficult Choices: An Evaluation of Heterogenous Choice Models

While the derivation and estimation of heterogeneous choice models appears straightforward, the properties of such models are not well understood. It is assumed that the properties of these models are identical to those of discrete choice models. We present analytical results that suggest the properties of these models are far more complex. Using a series of Monte Carlo experiments, we further ...

The effect of images of thin and overweight body shapes on women's ambivalence towards chocolate.

Many women experience ambivalent orientations towards chocolate, both craving for it and having concerns about eating it. The present study investigated the effect of viewing thin and overweight images of models in chocolate advertisements on ambivalent attitudes. Participants were 84 females, aged 17-63, allocated to a thin model condition, an overweight model condition, or a control group. As...

In-group Attachment and Glorification, Perceptions of Cognition-based Ambivalence as Contributing to the Group, and Positive Affect

One study examined modes of social identification (‘attachment’ to the group and in-group ‘glorification’) that can lead people to experience positive psychological consequences from their cognition-based ambivalent evaluations of the in-group. As expected, among highly attached participants, cognitive in-group ambivalence predicted a stronger perception of their ambivalent views about fellow g...
