CNS Inflammation and Epileptogenesis
نویسنده
چکیده
An association between acute CNS infections and seizures is reported in the literature. The etiology of these seizures is, in some cases, precipitated by epileptogenic pathogenesis of the infectious agent in the brain parenchyma. A different etiology of seizures as a consequence of infections, independent of the infectious agent, relates to the inflammatory reaction. Thirdly, the febrile response to infec tions may predispose the CNS to seizures due to the metabolic aberrations of fever. Febrile states have also been implicated in some cases of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. Current attempts to control seizures w ith anti-inflammatory treatments have shown contrasting result, therefore specif ic agents need to be developed and tested. متن کاملWhat Elements of the Inflammatory System Are Necessary for Epileptogenesis In Vitro?1,2
Epileptogenesis in vivo can be altered by manipulation of molecules such as cytokines and complement that subserve intercellular signaling in both the inflammatory and central nervous systems. Because of the dual roles of these signaling molecules, it has been difficult to precisely define the role of systemic inflammation in epileptogenesis. Organotypic hippocampal brain slices can be maintain...

متن کاملDual and Opposing Roles of MicroRNA-124 in Epilepsy Are Mediated through Inflammatory and NRSF-Dependent Gene Networks.
Insult-provoked transformation of neuronal networks into epileptic ones involves multiple mechanisms. Intervention studies have identified both dysregulated inflammatory pathways and NRSF-mediated repression of crucial neuronal genes as contributors to epileptogenesis. However, it remains unclear how epilepsy-provoking insults (e.g., prolonged seizures) induce both inflammation and NRSF and whe...
متن کاملCytokines and brain excitability.
Cytokines are molecules secreted by peripheral immune cells, microglia, astrocytes and neurons in the central nervous system. Peripheral or central inflammation is characterized by an upregulation of cytokines and their receptors in the brain. Emerging evidence indicates that pro-inflammatory cytokines modulate brain excitability. Findings from both the clinical literature and from in vivo and ...
