Distributional Properties and Endocentricity of English Gerunds

چکیده

This paper attempts to resolve problems involving distributional properties and endocentricity of English genrund constructions. This paper identifies two syntactic types in English gerunds: nominal gerunds and verbal gerunds. This distinction is based on syntactic and semantic characteristics of each type and is intended to account for the external distribution and endocentricity of the construction. Treating verbal gerunds syntactically as verb categories, this paper proposes that there are cases of control involving gerunds as in infinitives. Specifically, this paper claims that control is not limited to gerundive complements of verbs but can be extended to prepositional complements. This proposal not only resolves the distributional properties of the gerund construction but also captures syntactic parallelism observable between gerunds and to-infinitives in English.

Shared Task System Description: Frustratingly Hard Compositionality Prediction

We considered a wide range of features for the DiSCo 2011 shared task about compositionality prediction for word pairs, including COALS-based endocentricity scores, compositionality scores based on distributional clusters, statistics about wordnet-induced paraphrases, hyphenation, and the likelihood of long translation equivalents in other languages. Many of the features we considered correlate...

A constructional approach to English verbal gerunds

English verbal gerunds have long been of interest to syntacticians. Verbal gerund phrases display a mix of nominal and verbal properties which provide a challenge to any syntactic framework that assumes a strict version of X-bar theory. Various approaches have been proposed to get around these problems, but they all involve abandoning a fundamentally desirable theoretic assumption or adopting a...

On the Aspectual Properties of English Derived Nominals

English provides several distinct mechanisms by which verbs may be nominalized, as illustrated in (1-2). The form electing in (1a) is sometimes termed the “verbal” gerund, while the perfectly homophonous form in (1b) is termed the “nominal” gerund. Nominal gerunds in English are distinguished from verbal gerunds syntactically, by their inability to assign objective case to an object (hence the ...
