چکیده
Title: In vitro antibacterial activity of piperacillin versus piperacillintazobactam on gram negative clinical isolates from a tertiary care hospital. Objective :To compare in-vitro antibacterial activity of piperacillin with piperacillin-tazobactam combination on the most common isolates of gram negative bacilli obtained from various clinical samples from a tertiary care hospital. Methodology : Various clinical samples (n=291) were processed for isolation & biochemical identification of gram negative bacilli by using standard laboratory procedures. Most common isolates such as, E.coli (n=129), Klebsiella spp.(n=35) & Pseudomonas aeruginosa (n=127)were tested against piperacillin & piperacillin-tazobactam discs by using disc diffusion method. Result :Our results showed that, PT combination is highly effective against E. coli (P<0.0001)& Klebsiella spp(54.28%); but not in P. aeruginosa (P<0.14). Conclusion: PT combination does not increase the activity of piperacillin against P.aeruginosa. Hence, it should be judiciously used for treating P. aeruginosa infections, as these may respond to piperacillin alone.

Tazocin (Piperacillin-tazobactam) Susceptibility Pattern in Nosocomial Infections
Background & Aims: Utility of antibiotics, such as third and fourth generation of cephalosporins and carbapenems, and resistance to these antibiotics in hospital acquired infections are increased. There are scientific data that support the application of Tazocin (piperacillin-tazobactam) as an empirical treatment of moderate to severe bacterial infections. In our area there is not much informat...
متن کاملComparative in vitro activity of beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor combinations against gram negative bacteria.
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE Currently, the use of beta-lactamase inhibitors in combination with beta-lactam antibiotics represents an effective measure to combat a specific resistance mechanism of beta-lactamase producing organisms. Knowledge about the susceptibility profile of bacteria to different combination agents available is essential to guide appropriate treatment of severe infections in hosp...
متن کاملResistance Patterns and Prevalence of the Aminoglycoside Modifying Enzymes in Clinical Isolates of Gram Negative Pathogens
In this nationwide study we investigated the occurrence of aminoglycoside resistance patterns and prevalence of the aminoglycoside modifying enzymes (AMEs), aac(6), ant(2) and aph(3), in clinical isolates of Acinetobacter species, E. coli, Klebsiella species and Pseudomonas species isolates from various clinical specimens. A total of 319 clinical specimens recovered from urine, blood, wound, ca...

The microdilution checkerboard technique was utilized to distinguish synergistic activity between tobramycin and four beta-lactams: piperacillin-tazobactam, ticarcillin-clavulanate, ceftazidime, and ceftriaxone. Beta-lactam-aminoglycoside combinations were tested against 75 clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumanii, Citrobacterfreundii, Serratia marcescens, and Enterob...
متن کاملAntibiotic combination as empirical therapy for extended spectrum Beta-lactamase.
BACKGROUND extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producing gram negative bacilli are becoming a growing problem worldwide with difficulties in designing a national formulary for empirical treatment of gram negative sepsis. OBJECTIVES In this study, we investigated the in vitro activity of Carbapenems, Pipracillin-Tazobactam, Ciprofloxacin alone or in combination with aminoglycosides against ES...
