Investigating brain connectivity using mixed effects vector autoregressive models

چکیده
We propose a mixed-effects vector auto-regressive (ME-VAR) model for studying brain effective connectivity. One common approach to investigating inter-regional associations in brain activity is the multivariate auto-regressive (VAR) model. The standard VAR model unrealistically assumes the connectivity structure to be identical across all participants in a study and therefore, could yield misleading results. The ME-VAR model overcomes this limitation by incorporating a participant-specific connectivity structure. In addition, the ME-VAR models can capture connectivity differences across experimental conditions and patient groups. The ME-VAR model directly decomposes the connectivity matrices into (i.) the condition-specific connectivity matrix, which is shared by all participants in the study (fixed effect) and (ii.) a participant-specific component (random effect) which accounts for between-subject variation in connectivity. An advantage of our approach is that it permits the use of both theoretical results on mixed effects models and existing statistical software when fitting the model. Another advantage of the proposed approach is that it provides improved estimates of the within-subject coefficients (the random effects) by pooling information across subjects in a single-stage rather than the usual two-stage approach. We illustrate the ME-VAR model on a functional MRI data set obtained to investigate brain connectivity in the prefrontal, pre-motor and parietal cortices while humans performed a motor-related, decision-making and action selection task.

Investigating the functional communication network in patients with knee osteoarthritis using graph-based statistical models
Introduction: Osteoarthritis of the knee is the most prevalent type of arthritis that causes persistent pain and reduces the quality of life. However, no treatment alleviates symptoms or stops the disease from progressing. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies can provide information on neural mechanisms of pain by assessing correlation patterns among the different regions of the...

This paper has two aims. The first is forecasting inflation in Iran using Macroeconomic variables data in Iran (Inflation rate, liquidity, GDP, prices of imported goods and exchange rates) , and the second is comparing the performance of forecasting vector auto regression (VAR), Bayesian Vector-Autoregressive (BVAR), GARCH, time series and neural network models by which Iran's inflation is for...
متن کاملIdentification of mild cognitive impairment disease using brain functional connectivity and graph analysis in fMRI data
Background: Early diagnosis of patients in the early stages of Alzheimer's, known as mild cognitive impairment, is of great importance in the treatment of this disease. If a patient can be diagnosed at this stage, it is possible to treat or delay Alzheimer's disease. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is very common in the process of diagnosing Alzheimer's disease. In th...
متن کاملBayesian vector autoregressive model for multi-subject effective connectivity inference using multi-modal neuroimaging data.
In this article a multi-subject vector autoregressive (VAR) modeling approach was proposed for inference on effective connectivity based on resting-state functional MRI data. Their framework uses a Bayesian variable selection approach to allow for simultaneous inference on effective connectivity at both the subject- and group-level. Furthermore, it accounts for multi-modal data by integrating s...
متن کاملSCoT: a Python toolbox for EEG source connectivity
Analysis of brain connectivity has become an important research tool in neuroscience. Connectivity can be estimated between cortical sources reconstructed from the electroencephalogram (EEG). Such analysis often relies on trial averaging to obtain reliable results. However, some applications such as brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) require single-trial estimation methods. In this paper, we pres...
