چکیده

The existence and uniqueness of vortex solutions is proved for Ginzburg– Landau equations with external potentials in R2. These equations describe the equilibrium states of superconductors and the stationary states of the U(1)-Higgs model of particle physics. In the former case, the external potentials are due to impurities and defects. Without the external potentials, the equations are translationally (as well as gauge) invariant, and they have gauge equivalent families of vortex (equivariant) solutions called magnetic or Abrikosov vortices, centered at arbitrary points of R2. For smooth and sufficiently small external potentials, it is shown that for each critical point z0 of the potential there exists a perturbed vortex solution centered near z0, and that there are no other single vortex solutions. This result confirms the “pinning” phenomena observed and described in physics, whereby magnetic vortices are pinned down to impurities or defects in the superconductor. §

A serious obstacle impeding the application of lowand hightemperature superconductor devices is the presence of trapped magnetic flux: flux lines or vortices can be induced by fields as small as the Earth’s magnetic field. Once present, vortices dissipate energy and generate internal noise, limiting the operation of numerous superconducting devices. Methods used to overcome this difficulty incl...

Ginzburg-Landau vortex dynamics with pinning and strong applied currents

We study a mixed heat and Schrödinger Ginzburg-Landau evolution equation on a bounded two-dimensional domain with an electric current applied on the boundary and a pinning potential term. This is meant to model a superconductor subjected to an applied electric current and electromagnetic field and containing impurities. Such a current is expected to set the vortices in motion, while the pinning...

Probing dynamics and pinning of single vortices in superconductors at nanometer scales

The dynamics of quantized magnetic vortices and their pinning by materials defects determine electromagnetic properties of superconductors, particularly their ability to carry non-dissipative currents. Despite recent advances in the understanding of the complex physics of vortex matter, the behavior of vortices driven by current through a multi-scale potential of the actual materials defects is...

Stability of multiquantum vortices in dilute Bose-Einstein condensates

Multiply quantized vortices in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates are studied using the Bogoliubov theory. Suitable combinations of a localized pinning potential and an external rotation of the system are found to energetically stabilize, both locally and globally, vortices with multiple circulation quanta. We present a phase diagram for stable multiply quantized vortices in terms of the angular...

Numerical calculation of the vortex–columnar-defect interaction and critical currents in extreme type-II superconductors—a two-dimensional model based on the Ginzburg–Landau approximation

We extend our previous one-dimensional Ginzburg–Landau calculations of the pinning energy of vortices to two dimensions, in order to achieve an understanding of the pinning forces exerted on vortices by defects. By minimizing the free energy using a relaxation scheme, we obtain the spatial variation of the order parameter and supercurrents for a vortex in the vicinity of a cylindrical defect in...
