Arto Anttila Variation and Opacity

چکیده

Phonological variation and phonological opacity have been extensively studied independently of each other. This paper examines two phonological processes that simultaneously exhibit both phenomena: Assibilation and Apocope in Finnish. The evidence converges on two main conclusions. First, variation results from the presence of MULTIPLE METRICAL SYSTEMS within Finnish. Assibilation and Apocope are metrically conditioned alternations and the segmental variation reflects metrical variation. The metrical analysis explains a number of apparently unrelated phenomena, including typological asymmetries across dialects, quantitative asymmetries within dialects, differences between nouns and verbs, differences among noun classes, and the loci of lexical frequency effects. Second, phonological opacity arises from MORPHOLOGICAL LEVEL ORDERING. By interleaving transparent phonologies with independently motivated morphosyntactic constituents (stems, words, phrases) we derive the transparent and opaque interactions of four phonological processes, including Assibilation and Apocope. ABBREVIATIONS: 1P/2P/3P – first/second/third person; ALL – allative; CAUS – causative; CLIT – clitic; COND – conditional; ESS – essive; GEN – genitive; ILL – illative; INE – inessive; PAR – partitive; PAST – past tense; PL – plural; PX – possessive suffix; SG – singular; SUP – superlative; TRA – translative; QUE – question

On structural case in Finnish and Korean

The Case Tier Hypothesis (CTH, Yip, Maling, and Jackendoff, 1987) accounts for the distribution of nominative and accusative in Finnish and Korean remarkably well, but a number of outstanding puzzles remain. We reformulate the CTH in Optimality Theory (Prince and Smolensky, 1993/2004), showing that the newproposal covers all the standard data and extends to several previously problematic phenom...

Deriving variation from grammar: A study of Finnish genitives

A way to derive morphological variation from UG principles is proposed. The speci c problem discussed is the variable in ectional behavior of polysyllabic nouns in Finnish. An example is naapuri-gen-pl `neighbor' which has several surface variants, including naapurien and naapureiden. Building on Optimality Theory, I construct a grammar which predicts in what circumstances variation may and may...

The Partitive Constraint in Optimality Theory

This paper discusses a case of syntax/semantics interaction of a characteristically optimality-theoretic kind. Finnish partitive constructions exhibit a case alternation that is partly semantically, partly syntactically driven. The crucial semantic condition that plays a role in case selection is quantitative determinacy, which replaces the de niteness condition familiar from the Partitive Cons...

Stress and tone in Dagaare

Dagaare (Gur) is a two-tone language of northwestern Ghana with approximately 1,000,000 native speakers. Most of the canonical disyllabic nominals fall into three tonal classes: L-H, H-L and H-H. In the rst two, the second tone is a polarity tone: a su x assumes the opposite tone to that of the root. L-L is systematically absent. Based on our primary descriptive work, supplemented by the eldnot...
