Using Computational Similarity to Analyze the Performance Data of the NAS Parallel Benchmarks

چکیده
One of the major problems in using complex application benchmarks is the di culty to relate the measured timing information to basic properties of the hardware and of the application used. In this paper we extend the concept of computational similarity invented by Roger Hockney to analyze complex benchmarks. We demonstrate this method for the published performance data of the NAS Parallel Benchmarks. We nd that it is only to a very limited amount possible to get information about the details of the timing relations. For a detailed study, access to the actual implementation from the di erent vendors would be necessary to get analytical timing relations.

Performance and Scalability of the NAS Parallel Benchmarks in Java
Several features make Java an attractive choice for scientific applications. In order to gauge the applicability of Java to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), we have implemented the NAS Parallel Benchmarks in Java. The performance and sealability of the benchmarks point out the areas where improvement in Java compiler technology and in Java thread implementation would position Java closer to ...

A Cray X1 computer system was installed at the NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) facility at NASA Ames Research Center in 2004. An evaluation study of this unique high performance computing (HPC) architecture, from the standpoints of processor and system performance, ease of use, and production computing readiness tailored to the needs of the NAS scientific community, was recently completed. T...
متن کاملPerformance of the NAS Parallel Benchmarks on PVM-Based Networks
The NAS parallel benchmarks are a set of applications that embody the key computational and data-movement characteristics of typical processing in computational aerodynamics. Five of these, the kernel benchmarks, have been implemented on the PVM system, a software system for network-based concurrent computing, with a view to determining the efficacy of networked environments for high-performanc...
متن کاملHPC in Java: Experiences in Implementing the NAS Parallel Benchmarks
This paper reports on the design, implementation and benchmarking of a Java version of the Nas Parallel Benchmarks. We first briefly describe the implementation and the performance pitfalls. We then compare the overall performance of the Fortran MPI (PGI) version with a Java implementation using the ProActive middleware for distribution. All Java experiments were conducted on virtual machines w...
متن کاملData Flow Pattern Analysis of Scientific Applications
Many parallel and distributed applications have well defined structure which can be described by few simple relations. Some structures are so common that they are abstracted to parallel and grid benchmarks, other structures, are data and application dependent, become evident only at run-time. Many of these patterns reflect flow of data in the applications. Data Flow Graphs (DFG) provide an abst...
