چکیده

Network overlay construction has found many applications in today’s Internet, such as P2P networks [1][2], end-host multicast [3][4], and network security [5]. Many researchers have proposed solutions to building an overlay network among a given group of end-hosts. The usual overlay construction assumes two-way network communication— each host can initiate connections to and accept requests from other hosts. This is not always true on the Internet due to the use of Network Address Translation (NAT) and firewalls. Our experiments with one P2P file-sharing system revealed that over 34% of hosts were guarded hosts, i.e., hosts that cannot accept connections from other Internet hosts. The lack of two-way communication capability presents a challenge because only a subset of hosts can act as overlay routers. Using a cluster-base approach, we design a new overlay construction mechanism called e*, which organizes members based on reachability and intelligently select overlay routers to reduce end-to-end latencies on the overlay. Under realistic scenarios involving guarded hosts, e* can reduce average end-to-end latency on the overlay by 28-61% compared to existing protocols. Furthermore, e* significantly improves the worst case end-to-end latency on the overlay.

QoS-Aware Overlay Routing with Limited Number of Alternative Route Candidates and Its Evaluation

A recent trend in routing research is the use of overlay routing to improve end-to-end QoS without changing the network-level architecture. The key of this technology is to find an alternative route that can avoid congested routes, using an overlay network. Developing costefficient overlay routing in terms of calculation cost and information distribution cost needed to find an alternative route...

Overlay construction for mobile peer-to-peer video broadcasting

An efficient overlay is a crucial component of wireless cooperative live video streaming networks—an emerging wireless streaming solution with ever-increasing storage and computation capabilities, and provides scalability, autonomy, carrier-billing network bandwidth conservation, service coverage extension, etc. Based on whether routes are pre-calculated and maintained, or determined perhop in ...

Routing and Data Location in Overlay Peer-to-Peer Networks

Peer-to-peer overlay networks offer a novel platform for a variety of scalable and decentralized distributed applications. Systems known as Distributed Hash Tables provide efficient and fault-tolerant routing, object location and load balancing within a self-organizing overlay network. The alternative solution we propose is an overlay location and routing infrastructure that efficiently uses mi...

PeerCast: Churn-resilient end system multicast on heterogeneous overlay networks

The lack of wide deployment of IP multicast in the Internet has prompted researchers to propose end system multicast or application-level multicast as an alternate approach. However, end system multicast, by its very nature, suffers from several performance limitations, including, high communication overheads due to duplicate data transfers over same physical links, uneven load distribution cau...

Towards Robust Overlay Networks: Enhancing Adaptivity Mechanisms with Byzantine-Resilience

Adaptive measurement-based overlay networks offer increased performance and resilience to benign failures for end-to-end communication by using aggressive adaptivity mechanisms. These mechanisms dynamically optimize applicationcentric metrics such as latency, jitter, bandwidth, and loss rate. However, end-systems are more vulnerable than core routers, making overlay networks susceptible to mali...
