چکیده

Deckelnick and Dziuk (2009) proved a stability bound for a continuous-in-time semidiscrete parametric finite element approximation of Willmore flow/elastic flow of closed curves in R, d ≥ 2. We extend these ideas in considering an alternative finite element approximation of the same flow that retains some of the features of the formulations in Barrett, Garcke, and Nürnberg (2007b, 2008b, 2010b), in particular an equidistribution mesh property. For this new approximation, we obtain also a stability bound for a continuous-in-time semidiscrete scheme. Apart from the isotropic situation, we also consider the case of an anisotropic elastic energy. In addition to the evolution of closed curves, we also consider the isotropic and anisotropic elastic flow of a single open curve in the plane and in higher codimension that satisfies various boundary conditions.

Shear Waves Through Non Planar Interface Between Anisotropic Inhomogeneous and Visco-Elastic Half-Spaces

A problem of reflection and transmission of a plane shear wave incident at a corrugated interface between transversely isotropic inhomogeneous and visco-elastic half-spaces is investigated. Applying appropriate boundary conditions and using Rayleigh’s method of approximation expressions for reflection and transmission coefficients are obtained for the first and second order approximation of the...

Numerical approximation of gradient flows for closed curves in R

We present parametric finite element approximations of curvature flows for curves in R, d ≥ 2, as well as for curves on two-dimensional manifolds in R3. Here we consider the curve shortening flow, curve diffusion and the elastic flow. It is demonstrated that the curve shortening and the elastic flows on manifolds can be used to compute nontrivial geodesics, and that the corresponding geodesic c...

Radial Basis Function (RBF)-based Parametric Models for Closed and Open Curves within the Method of Regularized Stokeslets

The method of regularized Stokeslets (MRS) is a numerical approach using regularized fundamental solutions to compute the flow due to an object in a viscous fluid where inertial effects can be neglected. The elastic object is represented as a Lagrangian structure, exerting point forces on the fluid. The forces on the structure are often determined by a bending or tension model, previously calcu...

Stochastic Analysis of Seepage through Natural Alluvial Deposits Considering Mechanical Anisotropy

The soil is a heterogeneous and anisotropic medium. Hydraulic conductivity, an intrinsic property of natural alluvial deposits varies both deterministically and randomly in space and has different values in various directions. In the present study, the permeability of natural deposits and its influence on the seepage flow through a natural alluvial deposit is studied. The 2D Finite Difference c...

Parametric Study of Steel-Lined Pressure Shafts in Anisotropic Rock

Steel-lined pressure tunnels and shafts are used to convey water from the reservoir to the turbines in high-head hydroelectric power plants. An axisymmetrical multilayer model is often considered by engineers for the design of the steel liner. Stresses and deformations can then be computed with a closed-form analytical solution in isotropic rock. When the rock is anisotropic, the lowest elastic...
