چکیده
The present study quantifies and explains the differences between measured organ-specific polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) accumulation and elimination kinetics in seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) comparing these results with calculations using the generic model OMEGA. Specimens of approximately 250 g were selected and fed with food contaminated with PCBs 18, 44, 49, 52, 101, 105, 118, 138, 180 and 187. The OMEGA model was applied using a measured biomass (re)production coefficient and the food ingestion coefficient. It produced estimations of total body concentrations within a factor between 1.5 and 7.0 times of the measured and it also reproduced the general trend of the PCB concentrations during the experiment. This study allows us to confirm that there is a significant effect of internal distribution of PCBs in the tissues elimination rate constants and consequently in tissues bioaccumulation factors (BAF). The distribution of PCBs within the organism was slower than reported before, due to the bigger body size and the high lipid content of these fish. The present study indicates that internal organs (liver and visceral fat) can act as a contaminant sink, producing a variation pattern in muscle that differs from the overall body. This factor is enhanced if the organism has high lipid content.

In this study, 50 000 European seabass and 50 000 gilthead seabream with an average wet weight of 1.6 g were cultivated during 600 days under low water salinity conditions (7‰) of which getting out from underground at fixed 19°C, being produced in earthen ponds under commercial production conditions. From the beginning to the end of the experiment, the same fish feeds were used for both species...

The distribution of red-spotted grouper nervous necrosis virus (RGNNV) antigens was examined by immunohistochemistry in the nervous and non-nervous organs of juvenile European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) during the course of an intramuscular infection. Histological changes resulting from the infection were evaluated from 3 days to 2 months post-infection. The specific antibody response was a...

Larval and embryonic stages are the most critical period in the life cycle of marine fish. Key developmental events occur early in development and are influenced by external parameters like stress, temperature, salinity, and photoperiodism. Any failure may cause malformations, developmental delays, poor growth, and massive mortalities. Advanced understanding of molecular processes underlying ma...

Methylmercury (MeHg) is an environmental contaminant of increasing relevance as a seafood safety hazard that affects the health and welfare of fish. Non-invasive, on-line methodologies to monitor and evaluate the behavior of a fish system in aquaculture may make the identification of altered systems feasible—for example, due to the presence of agents that compromise their welfare and wholesomen...
