چکیده

The Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) is a general purpose transport protocol featuring multi-homing support, message oriented and more flexible data delivery mechanisms than TCP, and an increased protection against well-known attacks. Originally developed for the transport of Signaling System No. 7 messages, e.g. MTP level 3 user primitives, over IP networks, SCTP has evolved to a general purpose transport protocol with a wide field of applications. With respect to multi-homing, the current SCTP standard uses this feature for network level redundancy only. Therefore we propose and evaluate in this contribution mechanisms for the application-specific optimisation of the SCTP protocol behaviour with respect to its multi-homing capabilities. To satisfy the extremely strict performance requirements for signalling transport, efficient load sharing among all active links is also highly desirable in SCTP scenarios. To this end, we propose a novel, improved load sharing algorithm for SCTP with path based selective acknowledgements which avoids some of the drawbacks of the existing algorithms and achieves an increase in throughput. Results of a comparative simulation study are presented to demonstrate the benefits of our algorithm.

Experimental Performance Studies of SCTP in Wireless Access Networks*

The Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) is a new general-purpose transport layer protocol developed by the IETF. Compared with TCP, SCTP has two distinct features: multi-homing and multi-stream. Our work investigates the SCTP performance in various network environments, and its availability for different applications. This paper proposes a SCTP multi-homing scheme as the transport layer...

Performance Comparison of SCTP and TCP over Linux Platform

Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) is the third transport layer protocol next to TCP and UDP. The SCTP provides some distinctive features over the TCP. This paper is purposed to compare SCTP and TCP in the performance perspective. We compare the throughput of SCTP and TCP for the three different test scenarios: the performance comparison of SCTP and TCP for the different size of the us...

Performance evaluation of SCTP protocol for Smart Grid environment

Smart Grid Communication network will be a network of networks and with the obvious evolution and acceleration, it is crucial for its success to rely on a solid transmission protocol among its peripherals due to its real time streaming. The SCTP protocol, which was initially designed for transporting signaling messages over IP networks, is now an established in many modern applications. The mai...

Concurrent-Multipath-Communication SCTP A Novel Method For Multi-Path Data Transmission

Multi-homing at the transport layer is a mechanism that ties one transport layer association to several network interfaces at each communication host, which enabling the two end-nodes to exchange data over several network paths. Stream control transmission protocol (SCTP) supports multi-homing feature. We suggest Concurrent Multipath CommunicationSCTP (CMC-SCTP) which uses multi-homing as a bas...

Performance evaluation of subflow capable SCTP

With its new features such as multi-homing, multi-streaming, and enhanced security, the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) has become a promising candidate to join UDP and TCP as a general-purpose transport layer protocol. Multiple streams in an SCTP association provide an aggregation mechanism to accommodate heterogeneous objects, which belong to the same application but may require d...
