چکیده

The BitTorrent peer-to-peer file-sharing network is currently one of the dominant Internet applications. Understanding the characteristics of BitTorrent through real-world measurements is key to improve the quality of service for tens of millions of BitTorrent users, but the complexity and scale of BitTorrent make a single, complete measurement impractical. Thus, an increasing number of real measurements have employed diverse sampling techniques to study the BitTorrent network. However, there is no study that investigates the accuracy of the findings of the different measurement techniques used in practice. To address this gap, in this work we propose a thorough investigation of the accuracy of BitTorrent measurement techniques. To this end, we first introduce a taxonomy of inaccuracy sources. We then investigate the effect of these sources using 15 long-term BitTorrent datasets collected from 9 BitTorrent communities between 2004 and 2009. We find that most reported measurements are based on techniques that can lead to inaccurate characterization of system properties. Wp 1 http://www.pds.ewi.tudelft.nl/∼iosup/ B. Zhang et al. Performance Modeling of BitTorrent Peer-to-Peer File Sharing Networks

BitTorrent is undoubtedly the most popular P2P file sharing application on today’s Internet. The widespread popularity of BitTorrent has attracted a great deal of attention from networking researchers who conducted various performance studies on it. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of analytical performance modeling techniques for BitTorrent networks. The performance models examined i...

A Measurement Study on BitTorrent System

Measuring and characterizing peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing systems will benefit the optimization and management of P2P systems. Though there are a lot of measurement studies on BitTorrent almost in every important aspect, few of them focus on the measurement issues and the corresponding solutions, which can strongly influence the accuracy of measurement results. This paper analyzes the key di...

A Case Study in Modeling Large-scale Peer-to-peer File-sharing Networks Using Discrete-event Simulation

Peer-to-Peer file-sharing networks are garnering a significant share of home broadband networks. Since 2001, BitTorrent has been one of the most popular protocols for file-sharing. What makes BitTorrent so unique compared to past efforts is that it provides a builtin mechanism to ensure the fair distribution of content and prevents selfishness on the part of peers using game theoretical “tit-fo...

Availability of titles on peer-to-peer file sharing networks

File sharing, typically involving video or audio material in which copyright may persist and using peer-to-peer (P2P) networks like BitTorrent, has been reported to make up the bulk of Internet traffic (Pouwelse et al., 2008; Kryczka et al., 2011). The free-riding problem appears in this “digital gift economy” but its users exhibit rational behaviour (Becker and Clement, 2006), subject to the c...

A Measurement Study of the BitTorrent Peer-to-Peer File-Sharing System

P2P systems for sharing content have become very popular over the last few years. However, despite the increasing attention of both the research community and large numbers of users, the actual behavior of these systems over prolonged periods of time is still poorly understood. This paper presents a detailed measurement study over a period of eight months of BitTorrent/Suprnova, a P2P file-shar...
