چکیده

The incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) among ventilated infants is estimated to be between 4 and 40% depending on gestation but undoubtedly the highest incidence, in excess of 70%, occurs in infants weighing 1000 g or less at birth.' The incidence of BPD may further increase in the coming decade as advances in neonatal intensive care enable clinicians to save even smaller, lower gestation, and more critically ill infants. BPD is already a major cause of mortality and long term morbidity. A significant proportion of infants will be oxygen dependent for a prolonged period of time. Growth delay and neurodevelopmental deficit have also been reported with increasing frequency.' Thus, effective therapeutic measures are urgently required. Dexamethasone, a potent, long acting steroid with almost exclusive glucocorticoid property, was intensively studied and appeared promising in improving pulmonary function. This article examines the efficacy and adverse effects of dexamethasone treatment in preterm infants with BPD.

Comparing the Efficacy of High and Low Doses of Vitamin A in Prevention of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia

Background Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is one of the most common serious squeal of preterm infants. It involves approximately one quarter of infants with birth weight less than 1500 grams and 30% of less than 1000 grams. Vitamin A has been shown to reduce BPD rate. We compared efficacy of low and high doses of vitamin A for prevention of BPD in very low birth weight preterm infants. Materi...

Could mean platelet volume predict developing of bronchopulmonary dysplasia in preterm infants with respiratory distress syndrome?

Introduction: some studies have suggested correlation between MPV index and inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis in adults. Though bronchopulmonary dysplasia is also an inflammatory disease which develops in preterm neonates with Respiratory distress syndrome, we decided to study the possible correlation between the mean platelet volume (MPV) and the occurrence of bronchopulmonary...

Dexamethasone treatment in preterm infants at risk for bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

A randomised double blind placebo controlled study was conducted to determine whether a one week course of dexamethasone could reduce the severity of bronchopulmonary dysplasia in preterm infants without compromising their adrenal function. Forty one infants with a mean birth weight of 880 g and a gestational age of 27 weeks who were ventilator dependent at 10 days of age were enrolled. At the ...

Gastroduodenal perforation in preterm babies treated with dexamethasone for bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

Three cases of gastroduodenal perforation and one case of ulceration and extreme thinning of the gastric wall occurred in preterm babies treated with dexamethasone for bronchopulmonary dysplasia. This complication of treatment with steroids has not to our knowledge previously been described in preterm infants. Urgent abdominal paracentesis was an essential part of the resuscitation in these cas...

Dexamethasone treatment in the first week of life for preventing bronchopulmonary dysplasia in preterm infants: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND Dexamethasone treatment started soon after birth is controversial. OBJECTIVES To determine if postnatal dexamethasone treatment during the first week of life is beneficial in preventing bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants. METHODS Randomised controlled trials of postnatal dexamethasone therapy started in the first week of life in infants at risk of BPD were sought...
