Delay and Energy Models for Polling Based MAC Protocols with Sleep-Wake Cycles

چکیده
While decentralized medium access control (MAC) protocols are more popular in wireless networks, cluster based sensor networks are particularly amenable to centralized, polling based protocols. This paper presents an analytic model to evaluate the performance of a polling based MAC protocol in terms of the packet delay, buffer overflow rates and energy consumption. We show that the polling based protocol can outperform popular decentralized MAC protocols. Simulation results are presented to validate our model and conclusions.

Low Power MAC Protocols for Infrastructure Wireless Sensor Networks
This paper addresses low power MAC protocols for the downlink of infrastructure wireless sensor networks. We are interested in the trade-off between power consumption and transmission delay, focusing on low traffic. We describe WiseMAC (Wireless Sensor MAC), a new protocol for the downlink of infrastructure wireless sensor networks. Another original contribution is the analysis of the performan...

Wireless sensor networks are networks with low power nodes and limited processing. The main problem in these networks is energy. This resource is not replaceable or rechargeable. Therefore, optimal energy consumption for wsn protocols is a necessity. In a number of proposed protocols periodic sleep and wake is used for energy use reduction but these protocols result in increased end to end dela...

We present a sleep/wake schedule protocol for minimizing end-to-end delay for event driven multi-hop wireless sensor networks. In contrast to generic sleep/wake scheduling schemes, our proposed algorithm performs scheduling that is dependent on traffic loads. Nodes adapt their sleep/wake schedule based on traffic loads in response to three important factors, (a) the distance of the node from th...

متن کاملA MAC Protocol with Little Idle Listening for Wireless Sensor Networks
In wireless sensor networks, energy efficiency is crucial to achieving satisfactory network lifetime. To reduce the energy consumption significantly, a node should turn off its radio as long as possible. We propose a MAC protocol with little idle listening. The sensor node periodically turns on its radio in polling period and checks for a wake-up signal by sampling the energy on the channel. Af...
