چکیده

Silicon-based digital camera sensors exhibit significant sensitivity beyond the visible spectrum (400-700nm). They are able to capture wavelengths up to 1100 nm, i.e., they are sensitive to near-infrared (NIR) radiation. This additional information is conventionally treated as noise and is absorbed by a NIRblocking filter affixed to the sensor. We show that retaining instead of removing NIR information can significantly improve certain computational photography and computer vision tasks. Indeed, intrinsic properties of the NIR wavelength band guarantee that images can be sharper, less affected by man-made colorants, and more resilient to changing light conditions. The benefits of using NIR images in conjunction with standard color images in applications such as haze removal, skin smoothing, single and multiple illuminant detection, shadow detection, and material classification is discussed.

Ultraviolet, Infrared & Fluorescence Photography

The electromagnetic spectrum is comprised of a series of waves arranged in order of wavelength. The various types of radiation forming this spectrum differ widely, and only a very minute part of this spectrum has any relevance to photography. Usually photography is confined to the visible part of the spectrum, those waves that the eyes see as "light'. This part of the spectrum is comprised of w...

Automatic and accurate shadow detection from (potentially) a single image using near-infrared information

Shadows, due to their prevalence in natural images, are a long studied phenomenon in digital photography and computer vision. Indeed, their presence can be a hindrance for a number of algorithms; accurate detection (and sometimes subsequent removal) of shadows in images is thus of paramount importance. In this paper, we present a method to detect shadows in a fast and accurate manner. To do so,...

Semantic Image Segmentation Using Visible and Near-Infrared Channels

Recent progress in computational photography has shown that we can acquire physical information beyond visible (RGB) image representations. In particular, we can acquire near-infrared (NIR) cues with only slight modification to any standard digital camera. In this paper, we study whether this extra channel can improve semantic image segmentation. Based on a state-of-the-art segmentation framewo...

The Sightfield: Visualizing Computer Vision, and Seeing Its Capacity to "See"

Computer vision is embedded in toilets, urinals, handwash faucets (e.g. Delta Faucet’s 128 or 1024 pixel linear arrays), doors, lightswitches, thermostats, and many other objects that “watch” us. Camera-based motion sensing streetlights are installed throughout entire cities, making embedded vision ubiquitous. Technological advancement is leading to increased sensory and computational performan...

Material Classification Using Color and NIR Images

Material classification is becoming more important in computer vision and digital photography applications, which require accurate classification of objects present in the imaged scene. This is a very challenging task because the sheer diversity of scene content and lighting conditions decreases the usefulness of many colorand texture-based features used in image classification. In this work, w...
