چکیده
POSTPOLIO SYNDROME (PPS) REFERS to new, late manifestations occurring many years after acute poliomyelitis infection. Over the last 25 years, PPS has become a relatively common problem encountered by primary care physicians. A 1987 National Health Interview Survey estimated that about half of the 640000 survivors of paralytic poliomyelitis in the United States hadnewlatemanifestationsofPPS. Subsequent studies in the 1990s have found the occurrence of PPS among patients withpreviouspoliomyelitis torangefrom 28.5%to64%. Theaveragetimeinvarious reports from the acute poliomyelitisuntil theonsetofPPSisabout35years, with a range from 8 to 71 years. However, it isunclear if theoccurrenceofPPS increases with aging, which may be the case based on the most accepted etiologic hypothesis. The large number of PPS cases presently being seen is probably due to the poliomyelitis epidemics of the 1940s and 1950s. Risk factors for the development of PPS include the severity of the acute poliomyelitic paralysis, age at onset of the acute poliomyelitis (higher risk with adolescent and adult onset), the amount of recovery, and greater physical activity during the intervening years. The course of PPS has been reported to have an average progression based on strength measurements of 1% to 2% per year. Despite the fact that the course is relatively slow, PPS can present with multiple symptoms and signs.

E-mail:[email protected] ABSTRACT: Postpolio syndrome (PPS) may affect survivors of paralytic poliomyelitis and is characterised by a complex of neuromuscular symptoms leading to a decline in physical functioning. The effectiveness of pharmacological treatment and rehabilitation management in PPS is not yet established. To review systematically the effects of any treatment for PPS c...

The development of polio vaccines 50 yr ago essentially halted childhood polio epidemics in the industrialized world. During the past quarter century, a constellation of delayed neuromuscular symptoms, called postpolio syndrome, became recognized among the aging polio survivors. The prevalence of postpolio syndrome in the U.S. population is estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands. The most...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Postpoliomyelitis sequelae, such as gait instability and progressive weakness, predispose people with postpolio syndrome to secondary disabilities. With aging, people who depend on their upper extremities to accommodate lower-extremity deficits may anticipate overuse injuries. The purpose of this case report is to describe the use of mobilization and exercise in postopera...
متن کاملAnesthetic considerations for patients with postpolio syndrome: a case report.
Postpolio syndrome is a disorder related to the recurrence of neuromuscular symptoms in survivors of paralytic poliomyelitis. A comprehensive understanding of the pathophysiology is necessary for the anesthesia provider to develop a safe anesthetic plan. This case report discusses the anesthetic challenges and considerations in patients with postpolio syndrome, focusing on the importance of car...
متن کاملNormal serum levels of immune complexes in postpolio patients
OBJECTIVE The pathophysiology of the postpolio syndrome is not fully understood. Increased cytokine levels in cerebrospinal fluid and peripheral blood indicate a systemic inflammatory process. Decreased cytokine levels and the clinical effect of intravenous immunoglobulin treatment further indicate an inflammatory/immunological pathogenesis. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether ...
