Artilysins are a novel class of enzyme-based antibacterials that quickly kill (multidrug-resistant) Pseudomonas aeruginosa and their persisters: from concept to application

چکیده
Artilysins represent a novel, promising class of antibacterials, exploiting the lytic power of bacteriophageencoded endolysins. These enzymes are produced by bacteriophages at the end of their lytic replication cycle. Once the endolysins have passed through the cytoplasmic membrane, they degrade the peptidoglycan layer rapidly, causing osmotic lysis of the infected cell and liberation of the progeny. Purified endolysins have successfully been exploited to kill Gram-positive pathogens. However, Gram-negative bacteria are not susceptible due to the presence of a protective outer membrane.

Engineered Endolysin-Based “Artilysins” To Combat Multidrug-Resistant Gram-Negative Pathogens
The global threat to public health posed by emerging multidrug-resistant bacteria in the past few years necessitates the development of novel approaches to combat bacterial infections. Endolysins encoded by bacterial viruses (or phages) represent one promising avenue of investigation. These enzyme-based antibacterials efficiently kill Gram-positive bacteria upon contact by specific cell wall hy...
متن کاملOXA-10 and OXA-2 ESBLs among multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates from North West of Iran
Production of Extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) is a common mechanism of resistance in multidrug- Pseudomonas aeruginosa, but the frequency of different ESBLs may vary significantly in different parts of the world. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of OXA-2/OXA-10 type ESBLs and class 1 integron among clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa in Ta...
متن کاملLow concentrations of local honey modulate ETA expression, and quorum sensing related virulence in drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa recovered from infected burn wounds
Objective(s): Honey’s ability to kill microorganisms and even eradication of chronic infections with drug-resistant pathogens has been documented by numerous studies. The present study is focused on the action of honey in its sub-inhibitory levels to impact on the pathogens coordinated behaviors rather than killing them. Materials and Methods:</strong...

Background and Objective: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic nosocomial pathogen. Evidence suggests that the incidence of enzyme-producing strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Metalo Beta Lactamases (MBL) is a major problem in the treatment of infections caused by this organism. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of class I and II integrons among metalobetalactamase pro...
متن کاملMultidrug Resistance in Infants and Children
Bacterial infections may cause disease and death. Infants and children are often subject to bacterial infections. Antimicrobials kill bacteria protecting the infected patients andreducing the risk of morbidity and mortality caused by bacteria. The antibiotics may lose their antibacterial activity when they become resistant to a bacteria. The resistance to different antibiotics in a bacteria is ...
