Arterial Stiffness in Obstructive Sleep Apnea
نویسندگان
چکیده
Obstructive sleep apnea is a very common disease and is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, cardiac arrhythmia, and stroke. Arterial stiffness is an emerging risk factor and may be involved in the cardiovascular complications of obstructive sleep apnea. The purpose of this review was to demonstrate the correlation between arterial stiffness and obstructive sleep apnea. Arterial stiffness was increased in obstructive sleep apnea patients compared to controls or increased in severe compared to mild sleep apnea. Although there are relatively few interventional studies that have incorporated a control group, there are two randomized trials showing short-term improvements in arterial stiffness with CPAP treatment. Obstructive sleep apnea seems to play an essential role in arterial stiffness, which may be one of the mechanisms accounting for sleep apnea-associated cardiovascular risk.

Effects of Biofeedback Therapy on Cardiovascular and Respiratory Indices in NREM Sleep Parasomnias with Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Case study
Introduction: Non-REM parasomnias are a relatively common condition in the general human population. Current treatment plans are usually based on small case series and reports. Considering the effects of sleep disorders on different aspects of human life and the failure of pharmacological treatments in this field, the present study was designed to investigate a case of this sleep disorders with...

OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA (OSA) APPEARS TO BE AN INDEPENDENT RISK FACTOR FOR DIURNAL SYSTEMIC HYPERTENSION,1-3 although the biologic markers for this association have not been well worked out. Acute systemic blood pressure (BP) perturbations have been well described in association with obstructive events in patients with OSA,4-8 but arterial vasomotor activity, which may influence BP activity in ...
متن کاملEarly Variations in Augmentation Index and Pulsed Wave Velocity in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Arterial Hypertension Post CPAP Treatment
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a chronic repeated upperairway obstruction during sleep, characterized by repetitive apnea, hyperpnoea and oxygen desaturations leading to interrupted sleep, variations in blood pressure, and increased sympathetic nervous system activity [1]. The prevalence of OSA is 2–4 % in the general population [2-4]. The prevalence of cardiovascular disease (systemic hypert...
متن کاملCardio-Ankle Vascular Index and Its Potential Clinical Implications for Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a prevalent disorder associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). While arterial stiffness is a surrogate marker for the development of CVD, the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) is a recently developed metric for evaluating arterial stiffness. Clinical studies have shown that the CAVI is higher in patients with the sleep apnea syndrome. In particular, a re...
متن کاملImpacts of Comorbidities on the Association between Arterial Stiffness and Obstructive Sleep Apnea in the Elderly
Background: Although the impact of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) on cardiovascular risk is reasonably well established in middle-aged patients, the debate persists as to whether OSA also increases this risk in the elderly. Arterial stiffness has been used as an early independent predictor of cardiovascular risk. Study Objectives: We sought to determine whether OSA has significant effects on the...
