Micromechanical simulations of biopolymer networks with finite elements

چکیده
The mechanics of biological tissue is largely determined by the mechanics of biopolymer networks such as the extracellular matrix on cellular scale or the cytoskeleton on subcellular scale. Micromechanical simulations of biopolymer networks have thus attracted increasing interest in the last years. Here we introduce a simulation framework for biopolymer networks based on a finite element model of the filaments with a backward Euler time integration scheme. This approach surpasses previously published ones, especially those based on bead-spring models, by its sound theoretical foundation, a great flexibility, and at the same time an efficiency gain of approximately two orders of magnitude. Thereby it allows for addressing problems no previous numerical method could deal with, e.g., the micromechanical analysis of the viscoelastic moduli of crosslinked biopolymer networks in the low frequency regime or the analysis of the thermal equilibrium phases of such networks. By means of several examples it is discussed how this capacity can be exploited in multiscale simulations of biological tissue on cellular and subcellular scale. 2012 Elsevier Inc. Development of T-Trefftz Four-Node Quadrilateral and Voronoi Cell Finite Elements for Macro- & Micromechanical Modeling of Solids
In this paper, we explore three different ways of developing T-Trefftz finite elements of quadrilateral as well as polygonal shapes. In all of these three approaches, in addition to assuming an inter-element compatible displacement field along the element boundary, an interior displacement field for each element is independently assumed as a linear combination of T-Trefftz trial functions. In a...
متن کاملComparison Study on Neural Networks in Damage Detection of Steel Truss Bridge
This paper presents the application of three main Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) in damage detection of steel bridges. This method has the ability to indicate damage in structural elements due to a localized change of stiffness called damage zone. The changes in structural response is used to identify the states of structural damage. To circumvent the difficulty arising from the non-linear n...
متن کاملMicromechanical Simulation of Asphalt Samples Using a Finite Element Network Model
The micromechanical load transfer and failure of asphalt concrete samples are simulated using a finite element network model. The load carrying behavior of such a material is strongly related to the local load transfer between aggregate particles, and this is taken as the microstructural response. The model incorporates a network of special frame elements with a stiffness matrix developed to pr...
متن کاملSimulation of Asphalt Materials Using a Finite Element Micromechanical Model with Damage Mechanics
This work presents a theoretical/numerical study of the micromechanical behavior of asphalt concrete. Asphalt is a heterogeneous material composed of aggregates, binder cement and air voids. The load carrying behavior of such a material is strongly related to the local load transfer between aggregate particles, and this is taken as the microstructural response. Numerical simulation of this mate...

Nowadays, piezoelectric materials have wide applications in various industries. Therefore, investigation of these materials and their applications has a special importance. In this paper first, the natural frequencies of a traveling-wave piezoelectric motor are achieved, using finite elements simulations. Then, applying an alternative electrical voltage to the piezoelectric ring, a traveling wa...
