GSHE1cell cultures were established from 13-day-gestation fetuses collected aseptically by cesarian section from inbred Syrian hamsters, strain LSH/ssLAK (Lakeview Hamster Col ony, Nuffield, N. J.). Pools of primary cultures from littermates were stored in liquid nitrogen. Secondary cultures were initi

was induced by carcinogen treatment. Many cell types in culture undergo a process of neoplastic transformation spon taneously, i.e., in the absence of a known carcinogenic insult (31). During this transformation process, aneuploid cell lines arise that are often nontumorigenic in animals when injected as a cell suspension. These lines are generally termed “nor mal' â€ãnd are frequently used as model systems to study chemically and virally induced carcinogenesis (8). In this report, I present evidence that spontaneous neoplastic transformation of Syrian hamster embryo cells in culture occurs in at least 2 steps. An intermediate stage is represented by an aneuploid cell line. These cells differ from the normal, diploid cells, and evidence is presented that these cells are preneo plastic.

Essential Oils from Hairy Root Cultures and Field Cultivated Roots of Valerian (Valeriana sisymbriifolium)
Background: Plant cell cultivations are considered as an alternative to agricultural processes for producing valuable phytochemicals (secondary metabolites). The use of plant cell cultures has overcome several inconveniences for the production of secondary metabolites. Objective: The essential oils isolated from roots of 24-month-old field grown valerian (Valeriana sisymbriifolium) and hairy r...
متن کاملRESULTS OF CYTOGENETIC ANALYSIS OF 521 AMNIOTIC FLUID CELL CULTURES (AMNIOCENTESES) PERFORMED IN IRAN
The indications and results of cytogenetic analysis of 521 amniotic cell cultures performed at 13-16 weeks of gestation were evaluated in this study. 507 fetuses (97.3%) were cytogenetically normal, 14 (2.7%) had unbalanced karyotypes, and 2 fetuses were found to have major abnormalities, one with anencephaly detected by measurement of alpha -fetoprotein levels in amniotic fluid and ultraso...
متن کاملSpecies- and Length of Exposure-dependent Differences in the Benzo(a)pyrene:DNA Adducts Formed in Embryo Cell Cultures from Mice, Rats, and Hamsters1
The activation of benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) to DMA-binding metab olites in early-passage embryo Å“il cultures prepared from var ious species of rodents was investigated by exposing cells from mice (BALB/c and Sencar), rats (Wistar and Fischer 344), and Syrian hamsters to [3H]BaP for various lengths of time. The BaP:DNA adducts containing c/s-vicinal hydroxyl groups such as those formed from 7/3,8a-d...
متن کاملStudies on transformation of Syrian hamster cells by simian virus 40 (SV40): acquisition of oncogenicity by virus-exposed cells apparently unassociated with the viral genome.
During a study of the capacity of Syrian hamster cells derived from various organs to transform in vitro after exposure to simian virus 40 (SV40), it was found that cells from lung and liver responded differently compared to those from certain other organs. The most significant difference was the apparent absence of the viral genome in lung and liver cultures that eventually underwent transform...
متن کاملDetection of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis in the mesenteric lymph nodes of goats by PCR and culture
The efficacy of bacterial cultures and IS900-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was compared for the detection of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) from the mesenteric lymph nodes of goats. Samples were collected from 75 goats slaughtered in Ilam, in southwest of Iran. Tissue homogenates were inoculated onto four media. The genomic DNA was extracted directly from mesenteri...
