Effect of intense wind shear across the inversion on stratocumulus clouds

چکیده
[1] A large-eddy simulation model is used to examine the impact of the intense cross-inversion wind shear on the stratocumulus cloud structure. The wind shear enhanced entrainment mixing effectively reduces the cloud water and thickens the inversion layer. It leads to a reduction of the turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) production in the cloud layer due to the weakened cloud-top radiative cooling and the formation of a turbulent and cloud free sublayer within the inversion. The thickness of the sublayer increases with the enhanced wind shear intensity. Under the condition of a weaker inversion, the enhanced shear mixing within the inversion layer even lowers the cloud-top height and reduces the entrainment velocity. Finally, increasing wind shear or reducing inversion strength tends to create an inversion layer with a constant bulk Richardson number ( 0.3), suggesting that an equilibrium value of the Richardson number is reached. Abstract Unusually large wind shears across the inversion in the stratocumulus-topped marine boundary layer (MBL) were frequently observed during VOCALS-REx. To investigate the impact of wind shear on the MBL turbulence struct...
متن کاملEffect of coarse marine aerosols on stratocumulus clouds
[1] In contrast to fine anthropogenic aerosols (radii ∼<0.5 mm), large aerosol particles are thought to enhance cloud droplet growth, promote precipitation formation and reduce cloud albedo. While shown in cloud simulation models, the impact of coarse aerosols on marine stratocumulus clouds lacks observational evidence. Here, by combining data from AMSR‐E and MODIS, both aboard NASA’s satellite...

Our long-term goal is unchanged from last year. It is to learn how to predict the cloudiness, entrainment rate, and turbulent fluxes in the marine boundary layer under any and all large-scale conditions. In particular the effects of varying sea surface temperature, varying inversion strength, and varying mean winds must be included. The cloudiness types encompassed include fog, stratus, stratoc...

Introduction: Patterns of spatial and temporal rainfall impact on runoff and outlet hydrograph (Cordery, 1993; James, 1994). Results of different studies have clarified that simulation by using diverse rainfall data could increase the reliance of results. These were much more sensible in which areas encounter with data scarcity (Mello et al., 2008; Bekiaris et al., 2008). Rainfall properties in...

Modifications of turbulence regime in the sheared convective boundary layer (CBL) by a number of external nonbuoyant forcings are studied experimentally in a thermally stratified wind tunnel and numerically by means of large eddy simulation. This type of CBL is observed in the atmosphere when an originally neutral or stable air mass is advected over a heated underlying surface. Emphasis in the ...
