چکیده

This paper presents a method to optimize the energy efficiency of walking bipedal robots by more than 50 % in a speed range from 0.3 to 2.3m/s using elastic couplings – mechanical springs with movement speed independent parameters. The considered robot consists of a trunk, two stiff legs and two actuators in the hip joints. It is modeled as underactuated system to make use of its natural dynamics and feedback controlled with input-output linearization. A numerical optimization of the joint angle trajectories as well as the elastic couplings is performed to minimize the average energy expenditure over the whole speed range. The elastic couplings increase the swing leg motion’s natural frequency thus making smaller steps more efficient which reduce the impact loss at the touchdown of the swing leg. The process of energy turnover is investigated for the robot with and without elastic couplings. Furthermore, the influence of the elastic couplings’ topology, its degree of nonlinearity, the mass distribution, the joint friction, the coefficient of static friction and the selected actuator is analyzed. It is shown that the optimization of the robot’s motion and elastic coupling towards energy efficiency leads to a slightly slower convergence rate of the controller, yet no loss of stability and a lower sensitivity with respect to disturbances. The optimal elastic coupling discovered by the numerical optimization is a linear torsion spring between the legs.

Optimal elastic coupling in form of one mechanical spring to improve energy efficiency of walking bipedal robots

This paper presents a method to optimize the energy efficiency of walking bipedal robots by more than 80 % in a speed range from 0.3 to 2.3 m/s using elastic couplings – mechanical springs with movement speed independent parameters. The considered planar robot consists of a trunk, two two-segmented legs, two actuators in the hip joints, two actuators in the knee joints and an elastic coupling b...

Robust and efficient walking with spring-like legs.

The development of bipedal walking robots is inspired by human walking. A way of implementing walking could be performed by mimicking human leg dynamics. A fundamental model, representing human leg dynamics during walking and running, is the bipedal spring-mass model which is the basis for this paper. The aim of this study is the identification of leg parameters leading to a compromise between ...

Elastic coupling of limb joints enables faster bipedal walking.

The passive dynamics of bipedal limbs alone are sufficient to produce a walking motion, without need for control. Humans augment these dynamics with muscles, actively coordinated to produce stable and economical walking. Present robots using passive dynamics walk much slower, perhaps because they lack elastic muscles that couple the joints. Elastic properties are well known to enhance running g...

A General Form Solution for Elastic Buckling of Thin Cylinders Made of FGM under Axial Loading

In this article, the axisymmetric mechanical buckling of thin cylindrical shell made of functionally graded material (FGM) is considered. The governing equations for a thin cylinder based on the first-order shell theory and Timoshenko's assumptions are obtained. The equations are derived using the Sanders simplified kinematic relations and the principle of work and energy. The constituent mater...

Reconstructing human push recovery reactions using a three dimensional under-actuated bipedal robot

This paper presents the ability of hybrid zero dynamics (HZD) feedback control method to reproduce human like movements for walking push recovery of an under-actuated 3D biped model. The balance recovery controller is implemented on a three-dimensional under-actuated bipedal model subjected to a push disturbance. The biped robot model is considered as a hybrid system with eight degrees of freed...
