چکیده

Among the most common form of collaborative discourse in middle school science classrooms is the carefully planned laboratory investigation, where groups of students follow prescribed procedures in order to reproduce and measure some scientifically explainable event. While there are clear pedagogical benefits to replicating scientific processes in a controlled classroom setting, students often have difficulty comprehending how such phenomena manifest on larger scales and connecting their lab results to the real world. The WorldWatcher data visualization software adds a novel dimension to classroom investigations by allowing students to investigate and discuss climate phenomena within a globally situated geographic context. This paper will discuss the design of an integrated classroom curricular unit on global warming in which WorldWatcher activities and traditional classroom labs complement each other in order to support student collaboration in classroom science investigations. Based on analyses of students collaborating in pairs and in whole-class discussions, we will argue that our two-pronged approach to curriculum design represents an effective framework for introducing innovative computer-supported inquiry tools in urban middle school science classrooms while remaining sensitive to the existing practices of teachers and students in these contexts.

Integrating Instruction, Assessment, & Evaluation in a Technology- Based Genetics Environment: The GenScopeTM Follow-up Study

A previously reported study in 24 secondary science classrooms showed the GenScope computer-supported learning environment to be at least as effective as conventional curricula at enhancing genetics reasoning ability. A follow-up study in three more classrooms yielded the dramatic reasoning gains we had been seeking, partly by addressing four unresolved issues from the prior research. First, ad...

Flipped Labs as a Smart ICT Innovation: Modeling Its Diffusion among Interinfluencing Potential Adopters

Smart ICT innovation like flipped classroom pedagogy is freeing up face-to-face in-class teaching system for additional problem based learning activities in the class. But the focus of flipped classrooms is more on the theory side with related lab work in science subjects further getting marginalized. In this paper we are proposing Flipped Labs a method of pedagogy premeditated as a comprehensi...

Rapid collaborative knowledge building: lessons learned from two primary science classrooms

Cognizant that a critical 21 century skill is the capacity to do rapid collaborative knowledge building (RCKB) in a dynamic setting, we are interested to introduce practices for RCKB into classrooms. Through RCKB, students also have opportunities to learn and articulate their understanding in a deeper way than traditional classroom lessons. We describe a research project in which together with ...

Designing a Versatile Dedicated Computing Lab to Support Computer Network Courses: Insights from a Case Study

Providing adequate computing lab support for Management Information Systems (MIS) and Computer Science (CS) programs is a perennial challenge for most academic institutions in the US and abroad. Factors, such as lack of physical space, budgetary constraints, conflicting needs of different courses, and rapid obsolescence of computing technology, precipitate this challenge. While introductory com...
