An Analysis of VRML-based 3D Interfaces for Online GISs: Current Limitations and Solutions
نویسنده
چکیده
The fast developments in the information technology reflects also on the GIS community and new opportunities give new challenges to the research and development groups. As a result of these developments, 3D data can already be processed efficiently and better methods are being explored increasingly. At the same time, the Internet has matured in many senses since it was first publicized and it is being actively used in the developed and developing world despite the fact that it has a number of disadvantages mainly regarding the data traffic. Regardless of its disadvantages, it can be said that WWW is the most popular and powerful networked information system to date. [1] It is evident that a combination of the 3D graphics, geospatial data processing or GIS and internet is demanded at this stage of the technological development. More clearly, an Online 3D GIS is at demand. Yet there still are a number of limitations in existing technology and, to solve them, new approaches are being sought continuously. In this paper you will find a discussion of whether it is worth to try to utilize VRML/X3D as an interface for an online GIS system or not. The discussion is based on a literature survey.

متن کاملA Generic 3D Environment to Remotely Drill and Practice on Embedded Automated Systems
Although the use of educational intranet and e-learning environments has become familiar by providing specific educational in-network solutions, it is not the same thing for the environments of online laboratories, which require much more complex computing developments. We know that on-line laboratories offer a student the possibility to perform such tasks using a network connection. In this pa...
متن کاملVRML: Adding 3D to Network Management
The increasing number, complexity, and heterogeneity of network management resources have pushed industry and research to find new ways to visualise information that go beyond classic 2D solutions. Network topologies and layered information models have exposed the limitations of these solutions, demanding more powerful 3D visualisation techniques. This paper describes a new approach to the visu...
متن کاملWind Turbine Transformer Optimum Design Assuming a 3D Wound Core
A wind turbine transformer (WTT) is designed using a 3D wound core while the transformer’s total owning cost (TOC) and its inrush current performance realized as the two objective functions in a multi-objective optimization process. Multi-objective genetic algorithm is utilized to derive Pareto optimal solutions. The effects of inrush current improvement on other operating and design parameters...

Sample reconstructed 3D models from both datasets are attached in VRML format, to give a more comprehensive impression of the reconstructed point clouds shown in Figures 1 and 5c of the paper. Due to filesize limitations we only include 3D points reconstructed from at least 3 projections (about one third of all 3D points). The models of OLDTOWN (Online Resource 2) and COLOSSEUM (Online Resource...
