چکیده

This study was designed to evaluate the effect of the physical form of a hay diet on total tract digestibility in ponies, with particular emphasis in ®bre digestion and digesta passage rate. Ten gelded ponies (four of them ®tted with cannulae in the cecum and the right-ventral colon) were kept on wood shavings and fed twice daily a maintenance diet of equal parts Lucerne and Cocksfoot hay. The hay was either chopped (CH) or ground (1.5 mm screen) and pelleted (GPH). The apparent total tract digestibility of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), and ®bre fractions was measured in the six non-®stulated ponies using a crossover design. Two trials were conducted to measure mean retention time (MRT) of digesta in the whole digestive tract in four non-®stulated and four ®stulated animals using rare earth labelled hay and Cr-EDTA as markers of the particles and solutes, respectively. In a third trial, MRTs in the hind gut and the colon, as well as in the entire tract, were determined in the ®stulated ponies using various markers given by mouth and through the cannulae. OM and ®bre digestibility were not signi®cantly different (P > 0:05) between diets. However, particle (P < 0:05) and solute (P < 0:001) MRT were signi®cantly longer on GPH compared to CH as a consequence of an increased retention in the colon. The longer MRTs with GPH did not signi®cantly affect ®bre digestibility. This implies a reduction in the rate of ®bre degradation in the hindgut in the GPH fed animals. # 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Feeding ground and pelleted hay rather than chopped hay to ponies 2. Consequences on ®bre degradation in the cecum and the colon

This study was designed to evaluate the effect of the physical form of a hay diet on (1) in situ DM and NDF degradation rate and (2) postprandial evolution of pH and VFA concentrations, in the cecum and the right ventral colon of ponies. Four gelded ponies, ®tted with cannulae in the cecum and the right ventral colon, were kept on wood shavings and fed twice daily a maintenance diet composed of...

بررسی ارزش غذایی سطوح مختلف علوفه سیب زمینی ترشی(Helianthus tuberosus)و یونجه با روش های برون تنی و درون تنی (گوسفند)

This research was conducted to study the nutritive value of Jerusalem artichoke (JA) as animal feed. The aerial part of the JA plant was harvested, at full bloom stage, and then chopped and dried. The chopped JA hay included 0.0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 % of alfalfa hay, used as experimental diets, and tested for in vitro digestibility. Effects of supplementary feeding on growth and carcass characteristics of fat-tailed lambs grazing cereal stubble

Despite a shortage of animal feed in Iran, cereal stubble is often underutilized due to agro-economic reasons. On the other hand, lambs fed with a conventional fattening ration deposit a considerable amount of fat; therefore, this experiment was conducted aimed at better utilization of cereal stubble and reducing the fat content of lamb carcasses. Fat-tailed Mehraban and Ghezel ram lambs were p...

Relationships between chewing behavior, digestibility, and digesta passage kinetics in steers fed oat hay at restricted and ad libitum intakes.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationships between chewing behavior, digestibility, and digesta passage kinetics in steers fed oat hay at restricted and ad libitum intakes. Four Hereford steers, with an initial average BW of 136 kg, were used in an experiment conducted as a balanced 4 × 4 Latin square with 4 treatments (levels of intake) and 4 periods. Animals were fed lopsid...
