چکیده

Nematode egg hatch is an important phase in the life cycle (1). Factors that influence this process may have a highly significant effect upon the survival of the nematode, its generation time, and its ability to incite disease. Root diffusates and seasonal changes in environmental, physical, and chemical factors that are related to diapause in unhatched larvae affect the hatching of plant-parasitic nematode eggs (1,7,8). The effects of root diffusates on egg hatch are difficult to assess under multiple cropping systems common in the tropics (6). I f plant-parasitic nematode eggs are induced to hatch by root diffusates of component crops, then this aspect of the cropping system could be incorporated into a management strategy. Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) and maize (Zea mays L.), are common components of cropping systems in southwestern Nigeria. Cowpea is a good host ofM. incognita, whereas maize is a poor host (5,9). This study was carried out to compare, singly and in combination, the in vitro effects of root leachates collected from cowpea and maize on egg hatch ofMeloidogyne incognita (Kofoid and White, 1919) Chitwood, 1949. A population of M. incognita race 2 was reared in a screenhouse on cowpea 'Ire Brown.' Seedlings of Ife Brown and maize

Recovery and Longevity of Egg Masses of Meloidogyne incognita during Simulated Winter Survival.

Effects of soil matrix potential on longevity of egg masses of Meloidogyne incognita were determined during simulated winter conditions. Egg masses were recovered from isolated root fragments incubated in field soil at matrix potentials of -0.1, -0.3, -1.0, and -4.0 bars throughout winter survival periods of 10 weeks for tomato roots and 12 weeks for cotton roots. Egg masses were more superfici...

In-vitro Assays of Meloidogyne incognita and Heterodera glycines for Detection of Nematode-antagonistic Fungal Compounds.

In-vitro methods were developed to test fungi for production of metabolites affecting nematode egg hatch and mobility of second-stage juveniles. Separate assays were developed for two nematodes: root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) and soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines). For egg hatch to be successfully assayed, eggs must first be surface-disinfested to avoid the confounding effe...

Temperature-based Prediction of egg-mass production by Meloidogyne incognita.

A maturation-rate relationship for Meloidogyne incognita on Lycopersicon esculentum 'Rutgers' was derived and used to estimate harvest dates for maximum egg hatch from laboratory cultures at ambient temperatures. Daily maturation increments were totaled (nematode maturation total, NMT) and correlated with hatch from isolated white, yellow, and amber egg masses. Hatch per mass fluctuated periodi...

A Method for Field Infestation with Meloidogyne incognita.

A field inoculation method was developed to produce Meloidogyne spp. infestation sites with minimal quantities of nematode inoculum and with a reduced labor requirement compared to previous techniques. In a preseason-methyl bromidefumigated site, nematode egg suspensions were delivered at concentrations of 0 or 10(x) eggs/m of row where x = 2.12, 2.82, 3.52, or 4.22 through a drip line attached...

Effect of Ammonium Ions on Egg Hatching and Second-Stage Juveniles of Meloidogyne incognita in Axenic Tomato Root Culture.

Eggs, either dispersed or in masses, and second-stage juveniles (J2) of Meloidogyne incognita were exposed to different concentrations of ammonium ions in a nutrient agar medium upon which excised tomato roots were growing. Egg hatch and J2 penetration of the roots was slowed or inhibited at high (54 and 324 mg/liter) but not at low (1.5 and 9 mg/liter) concentrations of ammonium nitrate. The e...
