Personality and physiological correlates of performance decrement on a monotonous task requiring sustained attention.

چکیده
The reductions in task load resulting from the increasing automation of air traffic control may actually increase the requirement for controllers to maintain high levels of sustained attention in order to detect infrequent system malfunctions. A previous study indicated that individuals scoring high on a distractibility scale found it difficult to maintain sustained attention on a monotonous, but perceptually demanding, task. The present study used the same serial reaction task to study other possible personality, as well as physiological , correlates of individual differences in performance decrement under low task-load conditions. Sixty subjects performed the task continuously for 4" 0 minutes. Extraverted subjects showed increasing lapses of attention, while introverted subjects failed to show any evidence of a decline in attention. Of the two extraversion components (impulsivity and sociability), impulsivity was the component responsible for the obtained decrement. Heart-rate variability showed a significant relationship with performance decrement while mean heart rate did not. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The authors wish to gratefully acknowledge the assistance of Marilyn Dollar and Joe Bailey in scoring and analyzing the data of this study.

The Effect of Cognitive Switching on Sustained Attention
Tasks requiring sustained attention tend to show a decline in performance over time—a phenomenon known as the vigilance decrement. Recent research has successfully used task switches to reveal more about this decrement, but the analysis of individual switch factors has not yet been explored. In this study, a sample of 37 undergraduate Psychology students performed a fast-paced sustained attenti...
متن کاملInvestigating the Effect of Urban Traffic Noise Pollution on University Students' Cognitive Performance: A Simulated Study
Background and purpose: Cognitive performance in workplace encompasses a wide range of work-related psychological activities. Meanwhile, personality traits as a mediating variable has a determining role in mental functions and occurrence of errors. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of urban traffic noise pollution on working memory and sustained attention considering personali...
متن کاملSelf-estimates of distractibility as related to performance decrement on a task requiring sustained attention.
Increasing automation of air traffic control tasks may have the undesirable side effect of increased monotony as a result of the anticipated reduction in task demands. While the actual extent of increase in monotony resulting from such automation is not as yet known, it is known that performance during low task-load conditions is accompanied by declining attention. Since individuals who are una...
متن کاملCounting Sheep is a Good Way to Get to Sleep, but the Occasional Aardvark Will Wake You Up: How a Salient Event Improves Performance
Sustaining attention is a problem many of us face in various settings from the workplace to school. Sustaining attention is often crucial for good performance. Vigilance decrement refers to a decline in task performance as time on task increases. The current study induces a vigilance decrement across 2000 trials of a monotonous task. In this study each trial is composed of one target and one di...
متن کاملEnhancing vigilance in operators with prefrontal cortex transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS)
Sustained attention, often referred to as vigilance in humans, is the ability to maintain goal-directed behavior for extended periods of time and respond to intermittent targets in the environment. With greater time-on-task the ability to detect targets decreases and reaction time increases-a phenomenon termed the vigilance decrement. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of dorsola...
