چکیده

Jyoti Rai, Department of Biology, University of South Alabama, Mobile, AL 36688. Email: [email protected]. Sediment samples from three sites along Halls Creek were collected for inspection of benthic invertebrates. Sediments were collected from two opposite shores. Two samples were collected from each site. Halls Mill Creek, so far a healthy stream, is being degraded slowly by increased residential and commercial developments around its headwater. Benthic invertebrates were chosen as a candidate because they are a bottom dwelling organisms. Any substrate change or any toxic chemical deposited in the bed of stream will affect its abundance. It is short lived organism and the effect of any pollutant can be seen in shorter period. Biodiversity was correlated with water quality of the stream. Keyword: benthic invertebrates, biodiversity, sediment

The effect of Rainbow trout farms effluents on benthic macro-invertebrates of Marber River in Semirom

The effect of Rainbow trout farms effluents on benthic macro-invertebrates of Marber River in Semirom city was investigated in spring and summer of 2013. Sampling from benthic macro-invertebrates was done monthly using Surber sampler (mouth area of 30.5 * 30.5 cm with a 500 mesh net) at entrance, discharge and far from three fish farms. In addition to measuring physical and chemical parameters ...

Relating Remotely Sensed Optical Variability to Marine Benthic Biodiversity

Biodiversity is important in maintaining ecosystem viability, and the availability of adequate biodiversity data is a prerequisite for the sustainable management of natural resources. As such, there is a clear need to map biodiversity at high spatial resolutions across large areas. Airborne and spaceborne optical remote sensing is a potential tool to provide such biodiversity data. The spectral...

Variability of Polychaete Secondary Production in Intertidal Creek Networks along a Stream-Order Gradient

Dendritic tidal creek networks are important habitats for sustaining biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in salt marsh wetlands. To evaluate the importance of creek heterogeneity in supporting benthic secondary production, we assess the spatial distribution and secondary production of a representative polychaete species (Dentinephtys glabra) in creek networks along a stream-order gradient in...

Elevational Shifts of Freshwater Communities Cannot Catch up Climate Warming in the Himalaya

Climate warming threatens biodiversity at global, regional and local levels by causing irreversible changes to species populations and biological communities. The Himalayan region is highly vulnerable to climate warming. This calls for efficient environmental management strategies because biodiversity monitoring is costly, particularly for the developing countries of the Himalaya. Species distr...

Impacts of stormwater discharges on the nearshore benthic environment of Santa Monica Bay.

Although large loads of potentially toxic constituents are discharged from coastal urban watersheds, very little is known about the fates and eventual impacts of these stormwater inputs once they enter the ocean. The goal of this study was to examine the effects of stormwater discharges on the benthic marine environment of Santa Monica Bay. Sediment samples were collected across a gradient of s...
