GAS- AND SOLID-PHASE PARTITIONING OF PCDDs/Fs ON MSWI FLY ASH AND THE EFFECTS OF SAMPLING

چکیده
Introduction Semi-volatile organic compounds (SOCs), including polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/ dibenzofurans (PCDDs/Fs), are partitioned as gas-phase and particle-bound products of many industrial combustion processes. This gas/particle partitioning of SOCs has severe implications on both monitoring and control technologies. While particle-bound PCDDs/Fs are largely controlled by particulate collection devices such as fabric filters or electrostatic precipitators (ESPs), the gasphase fraction may escape. Additionally, current real-time or near-real-time monitor development has focused on detection of the gas-phase fraction of SOCs, including PCDDs/Fs. Post filter gasphase PCDDs/Fs have been reported to be greater than 50% of the total PCDD/F emissions when sampling the raw gas downstream of the boiler of a large scale municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) producing a low (<1%) carbon content fly ash. Others have reported that 50-90% of the PCDDs/Fs formed from thermal processes can be present in the fly ash fraction.

Municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash : Physicochemical characterization of organic matter
The aim of this work was to characterize the initial organic content of a selected municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash. This was realized by elemental carbon analysis using pyroanalysis of untreated samples. In addition, MSWI bottom ash extracts obtained by supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) or hot solvent extraction (Soxtec), were analyzed using gas chromatography (GC) coupl...
متن کاملPCDD/F and other micropollutants in MSWI crude gas and ashes during plant start-up and shut-down processes.
Nonstationary combustion conditions at municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) plants cause increased crude gas concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF), and other products of incomplete combustion (PIC). Such transient conditions occur, e.g., during and after start-up processes in MSWI plants. The start-up and shut-down processes of a M...
متن کاملBeyond waste: new sustainable fillers from fly ashes stabilization, obtained by low cost raw materials
A sustainable economy can be achieved only by assessing processes finalized to optimize the use of resources. Waste can be a relevant source of energy thanks to energy-from-waste processes. Concerns regarding the toxic fly ashes can be solved by transforming them into resource as recycled materials. The commitment to recycle is driven by the need to conserve natural resources, reduce imports of...
متن کاملImpact of the Addition of Chicken Litter on Mercury Speciation and Emissions from Coal Combustion in a Laboratory-Scale Fluidized Bed Combustor
Co-combustion of chicken litter with coal was performed in a laboratory-scale fluidized bed combustor to investigate the effect of chicken litter addition on the partitioning behavior of mercury. Gaseous total and elemental mercury concentrations in the flue gas were measured online, and ash was analyzed for particlebound mercury along with other elemental and surface properties. The mercury ma...
متن کاملRemoval of unburned carbon from municipal solid waste fly ash by column flotation.
Unburned carbon (UC) is the major source of organic contaminants in municipal solid waste (MSW) fly ash. So most organic contaminants can be removed by the removal of the UC from the MSW fly ash. In this paper, we first used a technique of column flotation to remove UC from MSW fly ash. The influences of column flotation parameters on the recovery efficiency of UC were systematically studied. I...
