Acidulation and Regeneration of Bamboo Derived Sorbents for Gas Phase Adsorption of Elemental Mercury

چکیده
This paper presents results that illustrate the recycling of a bamboo derived sorbent used for the capture of elemental mercury (Hg). The bamboo derived sorbent used is essentially a HCl functionalized activated carbon prepared from carbonization and CO2 activation of raw bamboo, that could potentially provide an alternative way to existing methods in removing mercury from flue gases from coal-fired plants. In this study, the bamboo derived sorbents were tested in a batch test using a mercury permeation tube as the source and nitrogen as a carrier gas. The recycling or regeneration of an activated carbon is an important issue to address from a coal-fired power plant point of view, and an attempt has been made to test the behavior of bamboo derived sorbents with various treatments including carbonized, carbonized-activated, carbonized-activated-acidulated, and then a follow-up recycled run after sample treatments in gas phase. From the study, it was found that bamboo derived activated carbon can be successfully acidulated using various normalities of HCl where weak solutions can be very effective in functionalizing the surface of the sorbent and capturing mercury. In order to recycle and reuse bamboo derived sorbents, stronger normalities of HCl would be desired.

Poultry manure as raw material for mercury adsorbents in gas applications
The quantity of poultry manure generated each year is large, and technologies that take advantage of the material should be explored. At the same time, increased emphasis on the reduction of mercury emissions from coal-fired electric power plants has resulted in environmental regulations that may, in the future, require application of activated carbons as mercury sorbents. The sorbents could be...

Chemical and morphological heterogeneities of carbon sorbents play important roles in gas-phase adsorption. However, the specific chemical complexes and topological structures of carbon that favor or impede elemental mercury uptake are not well understood and are the subject of this study. Temperature programmed desorption (TPD) with a model carbonaceous material (highly oriented pyrolytic grap...
متن کاملA New Approach for Retaining Mercury in Energy Generation Processes: Regenerable Carbonaceous Sorbents
The energy production processes from fossil fuels represent the first anthropogenic source of mercury emissions in Europe and the second in the world. Among the different possibilities that can be posed to reduce these emissions, this work focuses on the use of regenerable sorbents based on gold nanoparticles dispersed on activated carbon foam. The use of regenerable sorbents would not only all...

Introduction The major anthropogenic sources of mercury emission are coal combustion and municipal waste incineration. However, it is very difficult to remove the mercury compounds, particularly elemental mercury vapor, which is not effectively captured in typical air – pollution control devices. It has been reported that activated carbon, particularly activated carbon impregnated with sulfur, ...

BACKGROUND The objective of this work was developing a simple and stable time-based on-line setup for assessing the potential of mercury (Hg) vapor adsorption of the commercial sorbents used in air sampling and control operation followed by cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (CVAAS). METHODS A special designed separation chamber was used where reduction of the injected Hg (II) solution...
