As regularly and as certainly, as century succeeds century, or progeny progenitors; we find it difficult to account for that secret principle which prompts us to expend so much labopr, learning, health, wealth, and irrevocable time, in the construction of literary edifices, which, however majestic or beautiful in themselves, have their foundations necessarily washed by an ever-moving tide that must shortly overwhelm them in the ocean of oblivion. Yet, as this melancholy reflection applies to every sublunary pursuit, and characterizes mankind in every age, and in every country, it is evident that the impulse is from the hand of Nature?nay, from the hand of God ;?and consequently productive of good, upon the whole.
