Experiences developing architectures for realizing thin-client diagram editing tools

چکیده
Diagram-centric applications such as software design tools, project planning tools and business process modelling tools are usually “thick-client” applications running as stand-alone desktop applications. There are several advantages to providing such design tools as web-based or even PDAand mobile phone-based applications. These include ease of access and upgrade, provision of collaborative work support and web-based integration with other applications. However, building such thin-client diagram editing tools is very challenging. We have developed several thin-client diagram editing applications realised as a set of plug-in extensions to a meta-tool for visual design environment development. In this paper, we discuss key user interaction and software architecture issues; illustrate examples of interacting with our thin-client diagram editing tools; describe our design and implementation approaches; and present results of several different evaluations of the resultant applications. Our experiences will be useful for those interested in developing their own thin-client diagram editing architectures and applications.

Generating Web-based User Interfaces for Diagramming Tools
Thin-client diagramming tools provide a number of advantages over traditional thick-client design tools but are challenging to build. We describe an extension to a thick-client meta-tool that allows any specified diagram editor to be realised as a thin-client tool. A set of serverside components interact with the thick-client tool to generate GIF or SVG diagrams for both display and editing in ...

Development and usage of online social networking web sites are growing rapidly. Millions members of these web sites publicly articulate mutual "friendship" relations and share user-created contents, such as photos, videos, files, and blogs. The advances in web designing technology and fast growing usage of online resources prompted web designers to improve features and architectures of social ...
متن کاملBuilding Multi-Device, Component-based, Thin-client Groupware: Issues and Experiences
The use of groupware, or collaborative work-supporting technologies, has become wide-spread, but many existing groupware systems are too difficult to integrate with domain-specific software applications, only work for specific user interface hardware, or provide inappropriate, thick-client architectural solutions. We describe a set of server-side software components we have developed providing ...

متن کاملA Comparison of Thin-Client Computing Architectures
Thin-client computing offers the promise of easier-to-maintain computational services with reduced total cost of ownership. The recent and growing popularity of thin-client systems makes it important to develop techniques for analyzing and comparing their performance, to assess the general feasibility of the thin-client computing model, and to determine the factors that govern the performance o...
