Causes and clinical significance of increased carboxyhemoglobin

چکیده

The last of these is the subject of this article. Carboxyhemoglobin (COHb), which normally comprises less than 1-2 % of total hemoglobin, is the product of reaction between carbon monoxide and hemoglobin. Carbon monoxide is produced endogenously but is also a common environmental pollutant; both sources contribute to the amount of COHb in blood. The focus of this article is causes and clinical significance of an increased amount of COHb. Three illustrative case histories will be discussed.

Causes and clinical significance of increased methemoglobin

The principal function of the protein hemoglobin contained in red blood cells is transport of oxygen in inspired air from lungs to tissue cells. Although normally present in only trace amounts, there are three species of hemoglobin that cannot transport oxygen. The three species, collectively called the dyshemoglobins because of their functional redundancy, are: carboxyhemoglobin, sulfhemoglobi...

End-tidal Carbon Dioxide Measurements in Unintentional Non-Fire-Related Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Background: Poisoning with carbon monoxide occurs occasionally worldwide, and the gold diagnostic standard is to measure carboxyhemoglobin level in the blood. This study investigated the correlation between carboxyhemoglobin and the end-tidal carbon dioxide levels in 50 patients with carbon monoxide poisoning. Methods: We recruited 50 volunteer patients who had been admitted to the Emergency S...

Carbon monoxide in blood: an improved microliter blood-sample collection system, with rapid analysis by gas chromatography.

We examined the sensitive assay for carboxyhemoglobin based on reaction with K3Fe(CN)6 and gas chromatography of the liberated CO. Our improvements included increased baseline stability, shorter analysis time, and simpler standardization. EDTA-containing Vacutainer Tubes (lavender-stoppered) increase the carboxyhemoglobin content of blood stored in them. The carboxyhemoglobin content of blood s...

Blood carboxyhemoglobin level and platelets: a correlation study.

The high level of air pollution is an important problem. One of these major pollutants is carbon monoxide (CO), which can block normal physiology. Hematologic alteration is another important side effect of exposure to CO. Adverse effects on red blood cells, formation of nonfunctional hemoglobin called carboxyhemoglobin (COHb), have been well documented. The effect of CO on platelets is not well...

Determinants of Carboxyhemoglobin Levels and Relationship with Sepsis in a Retrospective Cohort of Preterm Neonates

Carboxyhemoglobin levels in blood reflect endogenous carbon monoxide production and are often measured during routine blood gas analysis. Endogenous carbon monoxide production has been reported to be increased during sepsis, but carboxyhemoglobin levels have not been thoroughly evaluated as a biomarker of sepsis. We sought to determine whether carboxyhemoglobin levels were elevated during sepsi...
