چکیده

Findings from a data mapping and extraction exercise undertaken as part of the STAR project are described and related to recent work in the area. The exercise was undertaken in conjunction with English Heritage and encompassed five differently structured relational databases containing various results of archaeological excavations. The aim of the exercise was to demonstrate the potential benefits in cross searching data expressed as RDF and conforming to a common overarching conceptual data structure schema the English Heritage Centre for Archaeology ontological model (CRM-EH), an extension of the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model (CRM). A semiautomatic mapping/extraction tool proved an essential component. The viability of the approach is demonstrated by web services and a client application on an integrated data and concept network.

Pattern based mapping and extraction via CIDOC CRM

The current situation within archaeology is one of fragmented datasets and applications, with different terminology systems. The interpretation of a find may not employ the same terms as the underlying dataset. Searchers from different perspectives may not use the same terminology. Separate datasets employ distinct schema for semantically equivalent information. Entities and relationships may h...

Mapping ICCD Archaeological Data to CIDOC-CRM: the RA Schema

This paper describes the work carried out by PIN (University of Florence) and the MiBAC, in the framework of the ARIADNE project, for mapping the Italian archaeological documentation system to CIDOC-CRM. ARIADNE’s primary goal is the implementation of interoperability among archaeological data at a European level, by creating a technological infrastructure for archaeological data sharing and in...

Semantic Technologies Enhancing Links and Linked Data for Archaeological Resources

Outcomes from the STELLAR (Semantic Technologies Enhancing Links and Linked data for Archaeological Resources) Project are presented. The basis for this research is the need to widen access to archaeological datasets, many of which rarely reach publication. The tools and methodologies presented will allow archaeologists, other related domains, or non-specialist third parties to cross search dif...

Implementing Archaeological Time Periods Using CIDOC CRM and SKOS

Within the archaeology domain, datasets frequently refer to time periods using a variety of textual or numeric formats. Traditionally controlled vocabularies of time periods have used classification notation and the collocation of terms in the printed form to represent and convey tacit information about the relative order of concepts. The emergence of the semantic web entails encoding this know...
