Twist instability in strongly correlated carbon nanotubes.

چکیده
We show that strong Luttinger correlations of the electron liquid in armchair carbon nanotubes significantly enhance the onset temperature of the putative twist Peierls instability and lead to its 1/R3 dependence on the tube radius. Depending on the values of the coupling constants the umklapp processes can either assist or compete with the twist instability. In the case of a competition the umklapp processes win in wide tubes. In narrow tubes the outcome of the competition depends on the relative strength of the e-e and e-ph backscattering. Our estimates show that the twist instability may be realized in freestanding (5,5) tubes.

Investigation of Dynamical Behavior (Transverse Vibration) and Instability Analysis of Carbon Nanotubes Conveying Nanofluid
This work focuses on the dynamical behavior of carbon nanotubes, including vibration, wave propagation and fluid-structure interaction. In the present research, transverse vibration of nano fluid conveying carbon nanotubes is investigated. To this end, based on the nonlocal and strain-inertia gradient continuum elasticity theories and by using rod and Euler-Bernoulli beam models, the system’s d...

The dynamic instability of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT), double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNT) and triple-walled carbon nanotubes (TWCNT) embedded in an elastic medium under combined static and periodic axial loads are investigated using Floquet–Lyapunov theory. An elastic multiple-beam model is utilized where the nested slender nanotubes are coupled with each other through the van d...
متن کاملCharacteristic Behavior of Carbon Nanotubes Kinematics of Persistent Currents
The electrical properties of a carbon nanotube depend strongly on its lattice structure as defined by chiral and translational vectors. A toroidal shape for a nanotube allows various twisted structures to occur in the direction of the tube axis. We investigate theoretically the kinematics of conducting electrons and persistent currents in toroidal carbon nanotubes. We show that persistent curre...

متن کاملCarbon nanotube-induced macroscopic helical twist in an achiral nematic liquid crystal
An achiral nematic liquid crystal was doped with a small quantity of carbon nanotubes, and the mixture was found to induce an average mechanical twist over macroscopic dimensions. The nanotube-induced chiral pitch length P was determined as a function of average nanotube concentration by measuring the radii of curvature of reverse twist disclination lines in 90° twisted nematic cells. The resul...
