On Redistributed Energy Fluxes in Topographic Scattering Problems

چکیده

The scattering of infinitesimal inviscid internal waves at topography redistributes the incoming energy flux in wave number and physical space. This energy flux redistribution describes the scattering process most succinctly. The definitions of the redistributed energy flux in wave number space and in various subspaces are given. All of the incident energy flux is redistributed in wave number space. The total redistributed energy flux in subspaces is only a fraction of the total incident flux and depends on the choice of subspace. These concepts are illustrated with examples from the scattering at an infinite straight slope, random infinitesimal topography, and finite topography in a finite-depth ocean.

The critical role of magnetic helicity in astrophysical large-scale dynamos

The role of magnetic helicity in astrophysical large-scale dynamos is reviewed and compared with cases where there is no energy supply and an initial magnetic field can only decay. In both cases magnetic energy tends to get redistributed to larger scales. Depending on the efficiency of magnetic helicity fluxes, the decay of a helical field can speed up. Likewise, the saturation of a helical dyn...

Explosion-Source Energy Partitioning and Lg-Wave Excitation: Contributions of Free-Surface Scattering

A 2D boundary-element numerical simulation approach and a local slowness analysis method for an embedded array are used to quantify effects of topographic scattering on near-source energy partitioning for simple underground explosion sources. Various parameters, including free-surface models with different root mean square (rms) random topographic fluctuations and correlation lengths, source de...

Evaluation of satellite and reanalysis‐based global net surface energy flux and uncertainty estimates

The net surface energy flux is central to the climate system yet observational limitations lead to substantial uncertainty. A combination of satellite-derived radiative fluxes at the top of atmosphere adjusted using the latest estimation of the net heat uptake of the Earth system, and the atmospheric energy tendencies and transports from the ERA-Interim reanalysis are used to estimate surface e...

Simultaneous estimation of heat fluxes applied to the wall of a channel with turbulent flow using inverse analysis

The main purpose of this study is to estimate the step heat fluxes applied to the wall of a two-dimensional symmetric channel with turbulent flow. For inverse analysis, conjugate gradient method with adjoint problem is used. In order to calculate the flow field,   two equation model is used. In this study, adjoint problem is developed to conduct an inverse analysis of heat transfer in a channel...

Impact of parameterized lee wave drag on the energy budget of an eddying global ocean model

The impact of parameterized topographic internal lee wave drag on the input and output terms in the total mechanical energy budget of a hybrid coordinate high-resolution global ocean general circulation model forced by winds and air-sea buoyancy fluxes is examined here. Wave drag, which parameterizes the generation of internal lee waves arising from geostrophic flow impinging upon rough topogra...
