چکیده
The invention of the Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR) in the late 1950s, today known as thyristor has led to the revolution in the control of electric power, i.e. in the field of power electronics. At present, about 70% of electric power is consumed by the process of power electronic equipments, and it is expected to grow up in the future. This paper is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the thyristor. The first part of the paper is dealing with the history and the second with the evolution from SCR to IGCT and ETO and the main characteristics of several members of the thyristor family.
