Wishful thinking and real problems: Small modular reactors, planning constraints, and nuclear power in Jordan
نویسندگان
چکیده
Jordan plans to import two conventional gigawatt scale nuclear reactors from Russia that are expensive and too large for Jordan's current electricity grid. Jordan efforts to establish nuclear power might become easier in some ways if the country were to construct Small Modular Reactors, which might be better suited to Jordan's financial capabilities and its smaller electrical grid capacity. But, the SMR option raises new problems, including locating sites for multiple reactors, finding water to cool these reactors, and the higher cost of electricity generation. Jordan's decision has important implications for its energy planning as well as for the market for SMRs. & 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Optimal Investment in Modular Reactors in a Finite Time Decision Horizon
Small and Medium sized reactors (according to IAEA, ’small’ are reactors with power less than 300 MWe, and ’medium’ with power less than 700 MWe) are considered as an attractive option for investment in nuclear power plants. SMRs may benefit from flexibility of investment, reduced upfront expenditure, enhanced safety, and easy integration with small sized grids. Large reactors on the other hand...
متن کاملSmall-Scale Modular Nuclear Power: An Option for Alaska?
The viability of a new generation of nuclear power plants, small modular reactors (SMR), has been studied as a possible way of meeting Alaska’s energy needs in the near to intermediate future. However, in order to understand whether SMRs present a viable option for Alaska, a thorough understanding of the technical, permitting, environmental and economic constraints is required. The intent of th...
متن کاملSub-transmission sub-station expansion planning based on bacterial foraging optimization algorithm
In recent years, significant research efforts have been devoted to the optimal planning of power systems. Substation Expansion Planning (SEP) as a sub-system of power system planning consists of finding the most economical solution with the optimal location and size of future substations and/or feeders to meet the future load demand. The large number of design variables and combination of discr...
متن کاملDevelopment of wishful thinking in 7 to 14 year-old Iranian children and adolescences
Several studies have investigated wishful thinking or desirability bias in children and adults, while no research has been conducted on the evolution of wishful thinking in childhood and adolescence. The present research aims to investigate the evolution of wishful thinking in Iranian children and adolescents aged 7-14. This study is an evolutional one with a cross- sectional method. The statis...
متن کاملCoordinated Planning and Scheduling of Electricity and Natural Gas Systems
In this paper we propose a model for coordinated planning of power and natural gas systems, as a part of electricity supply chain. This model takes into account costs and constraints of both systems, and with hiring simplifications and linearization methods transforms initially nonlinear formulation to a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem. Natural gas would be assumed steady state,...
