چکیده

This paper describes the use of genetic algorithms (GAs) for the optimal design of phononic bandgaps in periodic elastic two-phase media. In particular, we link a GA with a computational finite element method for solving the acoustic wave equation, and find optimal designs for both metal–matrix composite systems consisting of Ti/SiC, and H2O-filled porous ceramic media, by maximizing the relative acoustic bandgap for these media. The term acoustic here implies that, for simplicity, only dilatational wave propagation is considered, although this is not an essential limitation of the method. The inclusion material is found to have a lower longitudinal modulus (and lower wave speed) than the surrounding matrix material, a result consistent with observations that stronger scattering is observed if the inclusion material has a lower wave velocity than the matrix material. 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Designing Phononic Crystal with Convex Optimization

Designing phononic crystals by creating frequency bandgaps is of particular interest in elastic and acoustic metamaterial engineering. Mathematically, the problem of optimizing the frequency bandgaps is often nonconvex, as it requires the maximization of the higher indexed eigenfrequency and the minimization of the lower indexed eigenfrequency. A novel algorithm [1] has been previously develope...

Topology optimization of 2D phononic band gap crystals based on BESO methods

1. Abstract: Phononic band gap crystals, which could prohibit the propagations of elastic waves in certain frequency, are consisted of periodically distributed inclusions embedded in a matrix with high contrast in mechanical properties. In recent years, systematic design of phononic band gap crystals has attracted increasing attention due to their wide applications such as sound insulation, wav...

A Hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization and Genetic Algorithm for Truss Structures with Discrete Variables

A new hybrid algorithm of Particle Swarm Optimization and Genetic Algorithm (PSOGA) is presented to get the optimum design of truss structures with discrete design variables. The objective function chosen in this paper is the total weight of the truss structure, which depends on upper and lower bounds in the form of stress and displacement limits. The Particle Swarm Optimization basically model...

Quasi-two-dimensional optomechanical crystals with a complete phononic bandgap.

A fully planar two-dimensional optomechanical crystal formed in a silicon microchip is used to create a structure devoid of phonons in the GHz frequency range. A nanoscale photonic crystal cavity is placed inside the phononic bandgap crystal in order to probe the properties of the localized acoustic modes. By studying the trends in mechanical damping, mode density, and optomechanical coupling s...
