چکیده

Now, it is easy to see from the definition that a complete graph is definitely an edge expander as per the above definition. For our applications, we will be mostly interested in expander graphs which have a much smaller number of edges. For example, we would be interested in d-regular graphs which are expanders with parameters d = O(1) and α = θ(1). Clearly, α cannot exceed d. The existence of such graphs is guaranteed by the following theorem which we will come back and prove at a later point in time.

Lecture 7 : Expanders

In this lecture we give basic background about expander graphs. Expanders are graphs with strong connectivity properties: every two large subsets of vertices in an expander have many edges connecting them. Surprisingly, one can construct very sparse graphs that are expanders, and this is what makes them so useful. Expanders have a huge number of applications in theoretical computer science: in ...

WS 2011 / 2012 Lecture 8 : Construction of Expanders

In this lecture we study the explicit constructions of expander graphs. Although we can construct expanders probabilistically, this does not suffice for many applications. • One applications of expander graphs is for reducing the randomness complexity of algorithms (cmp. Lecture 6), thus constructing the graph itself randomly does not serve this purpose. • Sometimes we may even need expanders o...

Lecture 9 : Expanders Part 2 , Extractors

In the previous lecture we saw the definitions of eigenvalue expanders, edge expanders, and vertex expanders for d-regular graphs. To recap, in an eigenvalue expander, all except the first eigenvalue of the graph’s adjacency matrix are bounded below d. In an edge expander, every subset of vertices of size below a certain threshold has a large number of edges “going out” of the subset. And in a ...

Lecture 1: Expanders – an Introduction

In this lecture, we start with some basic definitions and notation, and then discuss some motivating applications of expanders. A graph G = (V,E) has vertex set V , with |V | = N , and edge set E. G is undirected, unless specified otherwise, and can be a multigraph. A bipartite graph will be denoted as G = (L∪R,E), i.e., its vertex sets are partitioned as L and R (L and R do not necessarily hav...

CS 369 E : Expanders in Computer Science

for their meticulous note-taking. We also thank Microsoft Research and the Computer Science Department at Stanford. We had indeed advertised that we will be covering recent results in the course announcement. We had planned to cover Reingold's new result " SL=L " , which we presented in lecture as scheduled. Little did we expect that Irit Dinur would come up with a simple proof of the PCP Theor...
