Phasor representation of oxy- and deoxyhemoglobin concentrations: what is the meaning of out-of-phase oscillations as measured by near-infrared spectroscopy?

چکیده
We propose a phasor representation for oscillations at a given frequency (or relatively narrow frequency band) of hemoglobin concentrations in tissue, as well as hemoglobin concentrations measured by near-infrared spectroscopy. This representation provides a straightforward visualization of the phase relationships between oscillations of oxy-, deoxy-, and total hemoglobin concentrations ([HbO], [Hb], and [HbT], respectively). We observe that measured oscillations of [Hb] and [HbO] with a phase difference that is neither 0 nor pi must result from the combination of different physiological processes that are out of phase (or time shifted) with respect to each other. Finally, we propose the use of cross-correlation phasors to map phase relationships and correlation levels among hemoglobin oscillations measured at spatially distinct locations at a given frequency. Such a representation may find a natural application in the study of functional connectivity networks in the brain.

Phase-amplitude investigation of spontaneous low-frequency oscillations of cerebral hemodynamics with near-infrared spectroscopy: A sleep study in human subjects
We have investigated the amplitude and phase of spontaneous low-frequency oscillations (LFOs) of the cerebral deoxy- and oxy-hemoglobin concentrations ([Hb] and [HbO]) in a human sleep study using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Amplitude and phase analysis was based on the analytic signal method, and phasor algebra was used to decompose measured [Hb] and [HbO] oscillations into cerebral blo...

Hemodynamic low-frequency (~0.1 Hz) spontaneous oscillations as detected in the brain by near-infrared spectroscopy have potential applications in the study of brain activation, cerebral autoregulation, and functional connectivity. In this work, we have investigated the phase lag between oscillations of cerebral deoxy- and oxy-hemoglobin concentrations in the frequency range 0.05-0.10 Hz in a h...

The phase shift between oscillations of blood pressure (BP) and Doppler middle cerebral artery flow velocity (MCAFV) reflects continuous cerebral autoregulatory action. It is not known whether a similar phase shift exists for cortical hemodynamics ('microvascular level') assessed by near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and what the effects are of pathological conditions. This study investigates th...
متن کاملNear Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS)
Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a noninvasive optical technology that relies on the relative transparency of biological tissues to near infrared light (700-900 nm) to determine tissue oxygenation. Oxy and deoxy hemoglobin and cytochrome aa3 possess distinct absorption characteristics in the near infrared spectrum. By monitoring absorption at wavelengths where oxyand deoxyhemoglobin and cyt...
متن کاملCerebral Hemodynamics Measured by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy at Rest and During Motor Activation
Near-infrared spectroscopy and imaging are powerful tools to detect and continuously monitor the cerebral hemodynamic and oxygenation changes induced by brain activity. However, in addition to the focal neuronal-activation-induced hemodynamic signals, near-infrared methods are also sensitive to the cerebral hemodynamic fluctuations of systemic origin associated, for instance, with the arterial ...
