Network Measures of Ecosystem Complexity

چکیده

We argue that the networks that can be constructed to represent ecosystems may inform us about the open-endedness of the evolutionary systems that underlie their dynamics. By adopting this approach we circumvent problems that arise from looking for open-endedness at the level of the organism, the more usual approach. We then examine various measures of ecosystem (niche web) complexity and propose a new informationtheoretic approach, Chaitin-Shannon Web Complexity. We compare its behaviour to that of the more common measures in ecology, in the light of common intuitions about complexity over a set of test networks and real ecosystem trophic webs. We also examine how the various measures accommodate intuitions about the complexity of these networks.

Inverse and Reverse 2-facility Location Problems with Equality Measures on a Network

In this paper we consider the inverse and reverse network facility location problems with considering the equity on servers. The inverse facility location with equality measure deals with modifying the weights of vertices with minimum cost, such that the difference between the maximum and minimum weights of clients allocated to the given facilities is minimized. On the other hand, the reverse c...

Landscape Planning for Conservation, Based on the InVEST Model of Habitat Quality and Ecological Impact Assessment of Road Network in Chaharmahal & Bakhtiari Province

One of the primary goals of conservation portfolio selection approaches is to create   a functional landscape or network of sites that can  support all elements of biodiversity and minimize the  environmental risk to critical habitats and species. As human activities, especially roads network development, can be regarded as one of the most important risk elements for the valuable habitats and s...

Quantifying the complexity of flow networks: How many roles are there?

Weighted flow networks are structures that arise naturally when analyzing complex systems. The countable properties of unweighted networks are not easily generalized to weighted networks. One candidate measure of complexity is the number of roles, or specialized functions in a network. It is easy to identify the number of roles in a linear or cyclic unweighted network. There is only one logical...

Applying KT Network Complexity to a Highly-Partnered Knowledge Transfer Effort; Comment on “Using Complexity and Network Concepts to Inform Healthcare Knowledge Translation”

The re-conceptualization of knowledge translation (KT) in Kitson and colleagues’ manuscript “Using Complexity and Network Concepts to Inform Healthcare Knowledge Translation” is an advancement in how one can incorporate implementation into the KT process. Kitson notes that “the challenge is to explain how it might help in the healthcare policy, practice, and research communities.” We propose th...
