چکیده

We present analysis of the visible through near infrared spectrum of ηCar and its ejecta obtained during the ”ηCar Campaign with the Ultraviolet Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) at the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT)”. This is a part of larger effort to present a complete ηCar spectrum, and extends the previously presented analyses with the Hubble Space Telescope/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST/STIS) in the UV (1240−3159 Å) to 10,430 Å. The spectrum in the mid and near UV is characterized by the ejecta absorption. At longer wavelengths, stellar wind features from the central source and narrow emission lines from the Weigelt condensations dominate the spectrum. However, narrow absorption lines from the circumstellar shells are present. This paper provides a description of the spectrum between 3060 and 10,430 Å, including line identifications of the ejecta absorption spectrum, the emission spectrum from the Weigelt condensations and the P-Cygni stellar wind features. The high spectral resolving power of VLT/UVES enables equivalent width measurements of atomic and molecular absorption lines for elements with no transitions at the shorter wavelengths. However, the ground based seeing and contributions of nebular scattered radiation prevent direct comparison of measured equivalent widths in the VLT/UVES and HST/STIS spectra. Fortunately, HST/STIS and VLT/UVES have a small overlap in wavelength coverage which allows us to compare and adjust for the difference in scattered radiation entering the instruments’ apertures. This paper provide a complete online VLT/UVES spectrum with line identifications and a spectral comparison between HST/STIS and VLT/UVES between 3060 and 3160 Å. Eta Carinae across the 2003.5 Minimum: Spectroscopic Evidence for Massive Binary Interactions

We have analyzed high spatial, moderate spectral resolution observations of Eta Carinae (η Car) obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) from 1998.0 to 2004.3. The data were obtained at discrete times covering an entire 2024 day spectroscopic cycle, with focus on the Xray/ionization low-state which began in 2003 June. The spectra show prominent P-Cygni lines in H I, Fe II a...

On the He II Emission In η Carinae and the Origin of Its Spectroscopic Events

We report Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of emission in η Carinae near 4680 Å, presumably He II λ4687, which are not spatially resolved from the central star. The emission was not detected in the spectrum from 1998.0 to 2003.0, or after the spectroscopic event in 2003.5. It appeared in early 2003, rapidly grew to a larger brightness than the previous authors reported, and then disapp...

Determination of Leaf Relative Water Content of Two Genotypes of Sesame Using Visible and Near- Infrared (VIS/NIR) Spectrometry to Detect Drought Stress

Relative water content (RWC) in plants is one of the most important biochemical parameters and its deficiency limits efficiency of photosynthesis and crop productivity. The scientific reports on using spectroscopy in detecting drought stress for sesame plants are very rare. In this study, the possibility of identifying water stress in two sensitive (Naz-Takshakhe) and resistant (Yekta) genotype...

The periodicity of the η Carinae events ⋆ † ‡

Extensive spectral observations of η Carinae over the last cycle, and particularly around the 2003.5 low excitation event, have been obtained. The variability of both narrow and broad lines, when combined with data taken from two earlier cycles, reveal a common and well defined period. We have combined the cycle lengths derived from the many lines in the optical spectrum with those from broad-b...

Accretion by the Secondary in Eta Carinae during the Spectroscopic Event: I. Flow Parameters

We examine the influence of the gravity of the companion (the secondary) to the massive primary star η Carinae on the winds blown by the primary and the secondary. The two winds collide with each other after passing through two respective shock waves, and escape the system while strongly emitting in the X-ray band. While during most of the 5.5 years orbital period, the companion’s gravity has a...
