The elimination of tetracycline discoloration by intentional endodontics and internal bleaching.

Tetracyclines were used extensively in the 1950s and 1960s as a broadI~c t rum antibiotic against many infections. In 1958, their adverse dental effects were reported? Studies in Ne following two decades have con'firmed that tetracyclines administered during tooth development could disturb enamel formation and cause dentin discoloration. 2-s A number of clinical methods have been considered to correct the problem of tetracyclinestained teeth, inc],uding full coverage restorations; labial veneering with composite or preformed laminate veneers; and vital bleaching. The l'esults of these treatments have varied unpredictably from one method to another and have often been associated with complications that limit their desirability. This paper describes a treatment alternative that promises esthetic improvement with minimal complications. The method eliminates the Source of the stain by intentional endodontics and internal bleaching; the results have been predictable, effective, and acceptable to the patients.
