چکیده

We report IRAM 30-m observations of DCN and DCO+ towards the galactic center molecular clouds Sgr B2 and Sgr A. We compare our results with simultaneous measurements of H13CN and HCO+ in order to derive estimates of the [DCN]/[HCN] and [DCO+]/[HCO] abundance ratios. We mapped Sgr B2 in DCN(2-1) and DCN(3-2) and we compared HCN with DCN for one position of our maps. The uncertainties in such measurements turn out to be large, due to optical depth effects, in the case of H13CN, and, in the case of Sgr B2, due to the strong foreground absorption in H13CN, HCN and HCO+. Taking these effects into account, we conclude that [DCN]/[HCN] towards the molecular ridge in Sgr B2 is 1.3 10−4 (uncertain by a factor 2) and towards the Sgr A molecular cloud is < 6 10−4. Towards Sgr B2, we also estimate [DCO+]/[HCO] to be 2 10−4 again with a factor of 2 uncertainty. We have carried out model calculations to estimate the amount of deuterium enhancement in these species in these clouds. We find, for temperatures between 40 and 120 K, that one expects D to be enhanced in DCN in the galactic center by a factor between 12 and 140 over the actual ratio of [D/H]. The corresponding enhancement for DCO+ would be between 23 and 460. Based on these results, we conclude that the ratio of [D/H] in the Sgr B2 cloud is 5 10−6 with a factor of 10 uncertainty. This result, while it has large uncertainty, suggests that deuterium is roughly one order of magnitude less abundant in the galactic center than in the solar neighbourhood. We briefly discuss possible consequences of this for the stellar initial mass function in the galactic center.

Chandra Observations of Diffuse X-Rays from the Sagittarius B2 Cloud

We present the first Chandra results of the giant molecular cloud Sagittarius B2 (Sgr B2), located about 100 pc away from the Galactic center. Diffuse X-rays are clearly separated from one-and-a-half dozen resolved point sources. The X-ray spectrum exhibits pronounced iron Kshell transition lines at 6.40 keV (Kα) and 7.06 keV (Kβ), deep iron K-edge at 7.11 keV and large photo-electric absorptio...

Widespread Rotationally-hot Hydronium Ion in the Galactic Interstellar Medium

We present new Herschel observations of the (6,6) and (9,9) inversion transitions of the hydronium ion toward Sagittarius B2(N) and W31C. Sensitive observations toward Sagittarius B2(N) show that the high, ∼500 K, rotational temperatures characterizing the population of the highly-excited metastable H3O + rotational levels are present over a wide range of velocities corresponding to the Sagitta...

Detection of HD in emission towards Sagittarius B 2 ⋆

The giant molecular cloud Sagittarius B2, located near the Galactic Centre, has been observed in the far-infrared by the ISO Long Wavelength Spectrometer. Wavelengths in the range 47–196 μm were covered with the high resolution Fabry-Pérot spectrometer, giving a spectral resolution of 30–40 km s−1. The J = 1 → 0 and J = 2 → 1 rotational transitions of HD fall within this range at 112 μm and 56 ...

Oxygen isotopic ratios in galactic clouds along the line of sight towards Sagittarius B 2 ⋆

As an independent check on previous measurements of the isotopic abundance of oxygen through the Galaxy, we present a detailed analysis of the ground state rotational lines of 16 OH and 18 OH in absorption towards the giant molecular cloud complex, Sagittarius B2. We have modelled the line shapes to separate the contribution of several galactic clouds along the line of sight and calculate 16 OH...

Time Variability of the Neutral Iron Lines from the Sagittarius B2 Region and Its Implication of a Past Outburst of Sagittarius A

We investigated long-term X-ray behavior from the Sgr B2 complex using archival data of the X-ray satellites Suzaku, XMM-Newton, Chandra, and ASCA. The observed region of the Sgr B2 complex included two prominent spots in the Fe I K ̨ line at 6.40 keV, a giant molecular cloud, M 0.66 0.02, known as the “Sgr B2 cloud” and an unusual X-ray source, G0.570 0.018. Although these 6.40 keV spots have s...
