چکیده

In the present paper bioaccumulation of Cr(III) ions by blue-green algae Spirulina sp. is discussed. We found that the process consisted of two stages: passive in which Cr(III) ions are bound to the surface of cells, identical with biosorption and active, metabolism-dependent, in which Cr(III) ions are transported into the cellular interior. The passive stage occurs in both living and non-living cells and the active – only in living biomass. Two distinctive mathematical models of the process were proposed. The first was physical model basing on the identified mechanism of the process. In the second model, artificia l neural networks were proposed.

Biosorption of Cr(III) by Microalgae and Macroalgae: Equilibrium of the Process

Equilibrium experiments of chromium(III) biosorption by microalga (Spirulina sp.) and macroalga (Pithophora varia) were investigated in this paper. Influence of the following process parameters was studied: pH, biomass concentration and temperature. The equilibrium of the process was described with Langmuir equation. The model parameters were determined at various process conditions. The best o...

Comparative Study on Heavy Metals Biosorption by Different Types of Bacteria

Biosorption of Cd(II), Ag(I) and Au(III) by cyanobacteria Spirulina platensis, of Au(II)—by Streptomyces spp. 19H, and of Cr(VI) and Cr(III)—by Arthrobacter species was studied by using the dialysis and atomic absorption analysis under various conditions. In particular, the impact of the following parameters on biosorption was studied: pH (for Ag, Cd, Au), living and non-living cells (for Cr), ...

Value added by Spirulina platensis in two different diets on growth performance, gut microbiota, and meat quality of Japanese quails

AIM The growth promoting effect of the blue-green filamentous alga Spirulina platensis (SP) was observed on meat type Japanese quail with antibiotic growth promoter alternative and immune enhancing power. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study was conducted on 180 Japanese quail chicks for 4 weeks to find out the effect of diet type (vegetarian protein diet [VPD] and fish meal protein diet [FMPD])-...

Effects of a Spirulina-based dietary supplement on cytokine production from allergic rhinitis patients.

Spirulina represents a blue-green alga that is widely produced and commercialized as a dietary supplement for modulating immune functions, as well as ameliorating a variety of diseases. We have previously shown that the in vitro culture of Spirulina with human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) modulated the production of cytokines. In the present study, we evaluated the impact of a Spi...
