High-Speed, Low-Power A/D Converter for a Low-Cost UWB Sub-sampling Radio by Shuo-Wei Michael Chen Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences University of California, Berkeley Professor Robert W. Brodersen, Chair Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology was approved by the FCC in 2002 and has since drawn considerable attention for a variety of applications, including imaging, surveillance, and locationing. One of the most attractive applications is for the indoor communication system which is allowed to operate in the frequency band from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz. The interest in these indoor systems extends from high-speed, shortrange systems to low data rate communications and precision ranging, as seen in the standardization efforts of IEEE 802.15.3a/4a. The data rate of interest scales from 100’s Mbps to 10’s Kbps. Regardless of application, it is very crucial to design with low cost and low power; especially as many of these applications intend to deploy a large volume of inexpensive UWB mobile devices that must operate with the longest possible battery life.

متن کاملEnergy-efficient analog-to-digital conversion for ultra-wideband radio
In energy constrained signal processing and communication systems, a focus on the analog or digital circuits in isolation cannot achieve the minimum power consumption. Furthermore, in advanced technologies with significant variation, yield is traditionally achieved only through conservative design and a sacrifice of energy efficiency. In this thesis, these limitations are addressed with both a ...
متن کاملHigh-Speed Data Conversion for Digital Ultra-Wideband Radio Receivers
Ultra wideband radio (UWB) is a new high-speed wireless technology that uses subnanosecond pulses to transmit information. Implementing an all-digital UWB receiver has numerous benefits ranging from low cost and ease of design to flexibility. Digitizing an RF signal near the antenna, however, introduces its own set of challenges and has traditionally been considered infeasible. A high-speed, hi...

Ultra wideband radio (UWB) is a new wireless technology that uses narrow pulses to transmit information. متن کاملTrend of High-Speed SAR ADC towards RF Sampling
One emerging trend of high-speed low-power ADC design is to leverage the successive approximation (SAR) topology. It has successfully advanced the power efficiency by orders of magnitude over the past decade. Given the nature of SAR algorithm, the conversion speed is intrinsically slow compared to other high-speed ADC architectures, and yet minimal static power is required due to the mostly dig...
