Nitric Oxide-Related Oxidative Stress and Redox Status in Health and Disease

چکیده
The molecular oxygen or dioxygen (O 2 ) molecule has 6 molecular orbitals (MO) in its triplet state, of which the two π 2p ∗ MO contain each one electron. Thus, O 2 has two unpaired electrons (indicated by a dot ); that is, O 2 is an uncharged diradical molecule: O–O. An electron that is donated by another molecule is incorporated in one of the two π 2p ∗ MO of the O 2 molecule; that is, one π 2p ∗

Altered Antioxidant-Oxidant Status in the Aqueous Humor and Peripheral Blood of Patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa
Retinitis Pigmentosa is a common form of hereditary retinal degeneration constituting the largest Mendelian genetic cause of blindness in the developed world. It has been widely suggested that oxidative stress possibly contributes to its pathogenesis. We measured the levels of total antioxidant capacity, free nitrotyrosine, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) formation, extracellula...
متن کاملAntioxidant effects of statins in the management of cardiometabolic disorders.
Redox systems are key players in vascular health. A shift in redox homeostasis-that results in an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and endogenous antioxidant defenses has the potential to create a state of oxidative stress that subsequently plays a role in the pathogenesis of a number of diseases, including those of the cardiovascular and metabolic system. Statins, whi...

First published July 26, 2012; doi:10.1152/japplphysiol.00610.2012.—There is now compelling evidence from studies in humans and animals that overexcitation of the sympathetic nervous system plays an important role in the pathogenesis ...
متن کاملCOMPREHENSIVE INVITED REVIEW Tetrahydrobiopterin in Cardiovascular Health and Disease
Tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) functions as a cofactor for several important enzyme systems, and considerable evidence implicates BH4 as a key regulator of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in the setting of cardiovascular health and disease. BH4 bioavailability is determined by a balance of enzymatic de novo synthesis and recycling, versus degradation in the setting of oxidative stress. Augm...
متن کاملNitric Oxide Functions; an Emphasis on its Diversity in Infectious Diseases
Nitric oxide is a short-lived mediator, which can be induced in a variety of cell types and produces many physiologic and metabolic changes in target cells. It is important in many biological functions and generated from L-arginine by the enzyme nitric oxide synthase. Nitric oxide conveys a variety of messages between cells, including signals for vasorelaxation, neurotransmission and cytotoxici...
